  • I enjoy the wide range of topics the hosts discuss on this show. My only qualm is that the audio quality isn't always that great. Overall, though, if you enjoy forests, ecology and conservation, this is an entertaining and informative show

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

From the Woods Today - Heat Stress in Plants
Q: So how can plants avoid this heat and how can they tolerate the heat?
Plants use structural features like leaf orientation, leaf size, and surface traits, plus behavioral responses such as drooping or changing leaf angle, to reduce heat load; they also rely on transpiration and cellular mechanisms like heat shock proteins to tolerate heat and recover.
From the Woods Today - Prehistoric and Extinct Wildlife in Kentucky
Q: Is there a then-and-now map of forests available online?
Yes, there is an online map, and related resources are available from the Office of Kentucky Nature Preserves; additional context is provided by Nature Preserves staff discussions and older UK publications about historical flora and fauna.
From the Woods Today - Frog Calls
Q: Is there a Merlin-like app for frog calls?
Not yet; currently there isn't a widely used app that can reliably identify frog calls in real time.
From the Woods Today - Spotted Lanternfly
Q: What kills spotted lanternflies besides a flamethrower?
A variety of insecticides are available, including contact sprays with pyrethroids like bifenthrin and permethrin, some organic options, and systemic injections such as dinotefuron to protect trees for a growing season.
From the Woods Today - Spotted Lanternfly
Q: What should you do if you spot a spotted lanternfly?
Report the sighting through the KY Citizen Science map or email reportapest at uky.edu, and consider swishing or removing egg masses where appropriate, especially in infested counties.
