  • I enjoy the wide range of topics the hosts discuss on this show. My only qualm is that the audio quality isn't always that great. Overall, though, if you enjoy forests, ecology and conservation, this is an entertaining and informative show

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

From the Woods Today - Frog Calls
Q: Is there a Merlin-like app for frog calls?
Not yet; currently there isn't a widely used app that can reliably identify frog calls in real time.
From the Woods Today - Spotted Lanternfly
Q: What kills spotted lanternflies besides a flamethrower?
A variety of insecticides are available, including contact sprays with pyrethroids like bifenthrin and permethrin, some organic options, and systemic injections such as dinotefuron to protect trees for a growing season.
From the Woods Today - Spotted Lanternfly
Q: What should you do if you spot a spotted lanternfly?
Report the sighting through the KY Citizen Science map or email reportapest at uky.edu, and consider swishing or removing egg masses where appropriate, especially in infested counties.
From the Woods Today - Pollinators
Q: How are native bees different from honeybees and why is it important to support them?
Native bees include many species that are solitary and specialized; supporting a diversity of native plants and habitats helps maintain pollination across ecosystems beyond just honeybees, which are generally managed in hives.
From the Woods Today - Pollinators
Q: What should homeowners do to support pollinators in their yards?
Provide continuous floral access throughout the growing season with mostly native species, ensure water and nesting habitats, minimize pesticide use, and use bee hotels or appropriate stem sources to host native bees.
