  • Mike Rowe and The Way I Heard It are one of the few reasonable voices left on the workforce and skills gap. Not only that but he has honest, friendly, and unbiased conversations with people of all walks of life without being explicitly political. I follow Mike on socials and really appreciate his sensibility and humorous take on life.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

496: Dr. Philip Ovadia—Meat is Medicine
Q: How should a patient approach testing and conversations with their doctor about insulin resistance and heart disease risk?
He recommends asking about fasting insulin levels and a CRP test, and emphasizes the coronary calcium scan as a key risk tool, arguing these tests guide more personalized prevention strategies.
496: Dr. Philip Ovadia—Meat is Medicine
Q: What inspired you to pivot from traditional heart surgery practices to a more nutrition- and lifestyle-driven approach?
Dr. Ovadia shares his personal transformation from an obese, prediabetic surgeon to advocating meat-based metabolic health, highlighting how recognizing insulin resistance and dietary missteps led him to change practice and recommendations.
497: Ethan Thornton—I Like a Lotta Problems
Q: What was the inciting moment that made you drop out to start Mach Industries?
Seeing the Ukraine convoy and imagining how your envisioned products could have changed the course of that event convinced me that I had to build them now, not later, to give our side an asymmetrical edge.
493: JD Vance—Communion
Q: Given the administration's commitment to reshoring, reindustrializing, and reinvigorating the trades, is that even possible until or unless the country rethinks its overall relationship with work?
Yes, it's possible, but it requires a cultural shift alongside policy changes. We need to value skilled trades, expand vocational education, and show concrete career pathways that are meaningful and well-compensated.
489: Michael Easter—The Hard Way
Q: What is the big takeaway from Scarcity Brain about why we crave more?
Our brain evolved to seek more due to past survival pressures, but modern environments reward quick, easy gains, leading to overconsumption and addiction; the solution lies in awareness and deliberate offsets of comfort.
