Reviews

3.7 out of 5 stars from 4 ratings
  • Weird background music

Great content in the podcast and great interviewees. But there’s highly unnecessary background music during the conversation that distracts from the conversation and can make it hard to hear the voices at times. If removed, this podcast would be highly recommended.

The Weekly Hotwire, Emissions, Forestry and the Farm Gate: A 2022 Policy Retrospective
Q: Have you got anything to say to farmers on that?
We're trying to balance fair, achievable reductions with the realities farmers face, ensuring there's ongoing support, better measurement, and investment in innovation to drive real on-farm improvements.
The Future of Livestock: Lessons from Europe
Q: In practice, what kind of agriculture does Europe really want to support, and what does that say about the European Union's vision for the future of farming?
Europe aims for a diverse farming model that balances economic performance with sustainability and strong local roots, prioritizes local feed production, and supports stronger risk management through better disease prevention and investment in innovation, while maintaining high animal welfare standards and ensuring fair economic returns across the food chain.
The Weekly Hotwire, New Zealand Deer Farmers Association chair Evan Potter.
Q: Evan, for those unfamiliar with the industry structure, what's the difference between DINZ and NZDFA? And why is it important that deer farmers have their own representative voice?
NZDFA is farmer-focused and handles farmer-facing issues, providing a united grassroots view, while DINZ operates at an industry-wide level with processes, transport, and policy. The DFA aggregates farmer opinions through a branch network to present a majority view.
Matt Carroll from Baker Ag on deer farming today.
Q: How should a new entrant approach diversification—should deer be a primary focus or part of a broader mix?
Diversification is recommended to reduce volatility and share risk across species, but it adds complexity and requires careful planning of feed, stock classes, and market timing. Velvet and venison revenue streams, along with market access, should be integrated into a staged, strategic plan.
Matt Carroll from Baker Ag on deer farming today.
Q: What are the cost considerations for a traditional sheep and beef farmer to get into deer farming?
Capital expenditure is a major constraint, particularly fencing, sheds, and handling facilities. The discussion notes that deer fencing costs are higher but manageable, and existing infrastructure can often be adapted; the path to entry is through leveraging industry resources like the Deer Hub and DFA for guidance and potential stock sources.
