  • Great stuff

I can’t believe I’ve only just found this podcast. I heard Icy’s name mentioned by Kate Cherrell at Burials and Beyond. I’m now working my way through the amazing back catalogue. Well researched, engaging and just really entertaining.

I’ve just taken delivery of Rebel Folklore and will definitely be looking up Icys other books.

  • Superb Podcast

I’ve only just found out about this podcast after hearing Icy on another Geordie podcast How Haunted with Rob Kirkup. It’s so good to listen to a well informed and researched podcast created by a woman. Icy has an excellent leftfield sense of humour. Another great thing is the lack of adverts, I hope it stays this way.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Theatre Superstitions: Whistling, the Ghost Light, and Macbeth
Q: Why do actors avoid saying Macbeth, and how seriously is it taken?
Actors take the Macbeth superstition very seriously; many refer to it as the Scottish Play, leave the theatre through the stage door and perform a ritual (spitting, turning three times, and sometimes cursing or quoting another play) to readmit themselves after mentioning it.
Theatre Superstitions: Whistling, the Ghost Light, and Macbeth
Q: What rituals do you see people traditionally doing backstage?
There's a broad spectrum of backstage rituals, including forming a circle, warm-up chants or songs, and practices around shoes and placement that actors view as both cohesion and a protective ritual against mishap.
The Scottish Fairy Courts with Morgan Daimler
Q: Why is contextual accuracy important when discussing fairy folklore?
Because the folklore is highly regional and layered, and modern retellings or online discussions can strip away that nuance, leading to misinterpretations such as universal 'tropes' like the tide to hell or the idea that all fairies are safe or friendly.
The Scottish Fairy Courts with Morgan Daimler
Q: How did the Seelie and Unseelie terms enter modern understanding?
They originated as a regional and euphemistic way to refer to different groups of fairies, with Seelie often seen as a more positive group in folklore, but not inherently safe, and Unseelie as more dangerous; Victorian writers later popularized a clear good/bad dichotomy that isn't faithful to earlier, regionally varied beliefs.
Polish Folk Magic with Joanna Tarnawska
Q: What Christian elements commonly appear in Polish folk magic?
She notes that folk magic in Poland is syncretic, absorbing pre-Christian beliefs and folk Catholic elements; these are cultural practices rather than dogma, and they survive within a living tradition that evolves with the community.
