"She has tremendous talent, of course, or she couldn’t do it at all, but I do sometimes feel that she—well—she repeats herself. Put it like this: I think maybe Carol doesn't give herself a chance to be herself any more than she gives us."

It’s been decades since I did any close reading of literature, and as a science professor I’m unlikely to do it in the future, so I’m very glad to listen in on the brilliance. Reading the books in order is a great approach that’s uncovering themes in a really cool way, and I’m not kidding, I think they made the most sense of Fire and Hemlock I’ve ever heard. That Hugo nomination is very well deserved!
Thank you both for taking the time to share your thoughts, your passion and your knowledge of all things Diana Wynne Jones. I could have done with this a few years ago when I first read Dalemark and was simultaneously awed and flummoxed! I have listened to almost all the episodes of this first season - except for the couple of books I have yet to read - and I am really looking forward to the rest! Please do keep going. Diana WJ is one of our best and most undervalued authors and she deserves the... more
I’m so happy to have stumbled on this podcast about one of my favourite authors. It’s a total joy from start to finish. I’ve just binged the entire first series and I can’t wait for the second. Please keep going!
I love Diana Wynne Jones but have never thought about her chronologically before. You bring out such interesting things, like the development in how she writes families and myths. It makes me want to go come up with books.
Just caught up with the bonus episode - I have enjoyed this series so so much. A total delight to have people thinking and talking about Diana Wynne Jones with the care and enthusiasm her work deserves, and fascinating to read her work chronologically like this and see how the themes develop. Also love that you are so into Dalemark - I keep trying to persuade more people to read it!
