Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

S12 E19: Thomas Schlegel, Built
Q: What advice would you give a young entrepreneur on a plane about balancing work and life while pursuing ambitious goals?
The key is to avoid sacrificing everything for the project; you should work hard but also protect core aspects of life. Allocate about 75 percent of yourself to a project if needed, but ensure you maintain relationships, health, and personal well-being. Persistence matters, but so does balance, and losing sight of what matters outside work can undermine long-term success.
S12 E19: Thomas Schlegel, Built
Q: What did you do next after the MVP and the Home Builder Finance project? How did you progress Build's roadmap?
After completing the initial MVP, the focus shifted to building a broader platform rather than a single product. Thomas founded Platform Engineering and established a reference architecture plus an RFC process to enable teams to compose new solutions using shared building blocks. This set the foundation for a multi-sided platform and eventual expansion into enterprise commercial real estate products, with organizational prioritization tied to customer value and outcomes.
S12 E19: Thomas Schlegel, Built
Q: I'm curious what you would consider that first like big project you had to take on. How did you do it and what tools did you use?
The early big project was Home Builder Finance, tackled around 2019. It required deep domain understanding of construction lending, cross-functional design, and iterative prototyping with design partners like Regions Bank and US Bank. Over time, the team refined the product through multiple versions, learning the problem firsthand and eventually expanding into a platform approach with a reference architecture to guide future builds.
S12 Bonus: Yoni Avital, ControlUp
Q: Tell me about the MVP, the first version you built and how long it took.
The MVP was basic but built with real customer feedback from our services work; over roughly a year we iterated with Israeli customers, adding metrics, views, and reports, testing in customer environments, which helped it scale enough for enterprise use.
Making AI Deterministic for Developers and their Agents, with Patrick Vuong of Moderne
Q: So what is Moderne? Tell me about the company and the product suite.
Moderne focuses on helping customers modernize their codebases for AI, expanding from tech debt and AI readiness to providing deterministic tooling that helps agents search, context, and orchestrate across fleets, with a vision of a modern, autonomous software factory.
