  • Accessible but not simplistic

I first learned of this podcast due to the 10/23/23 crossover episode with the Brom podcast. I wish I’d known of it earlier.

A standout feature are the interludes which explain the more unfamiliar or difficult aspects of the discussion. This allows the main conversation to proceed at a high level without leaving novices behind. I wish more podcasts did this.

Brain Organoids: from Space to AI with Alysson Muotri
Q: You mentioned a platform that uses organoids for AI-inspired learning. Can you describe the stage of this project and what makes organoid-based learning different from traditional AI?
The project aims to leverage the self-organizing, memory-forming networks within organoids to develop learning mechanisms that could complement or replace some AI models, particularly in areas like generalization and energy efficiency, by tapping into the brain's own efficient computational strategies.
Brain Organoids: from Space to AI with Alysson Muotri
Q: Can you explain how space conditions specifically influence aging and development in brain organoids, and what that means for disease modeling on Earth?
Space accelerates aging signals in organoids through factors like microgravity, cosmic radiation, and magnetic fields, allowing researchers to observe maturation and degeneration at a faster timescale, which can reveal early disease processes and potential interventions not visible in Earth-based models.
Inside Philanthropy’s Role in Mental & Brain Health
Q: How should philanthropy balance funding for direct services versus systemic solutions?
A blended approach is necessary: fund direct services and infrastructure while also investing in systems change, public-private partnerships, and collaborative networks that reduce silos and scale successful models.
AI and the future of therapy with Luis Voloch of Jimini Health
Q: Luis, do you agree, disagree with the perception that AI may hold back mental health innovation?
I agree, but there are also specific mental health legislations that could make deployment harder for larger foundation models.
The 4-Hour Sleepers Redefining Human Limits with Ying-Hui Fu of UCSF
Q: What has it taught us about the purpose of sleep?
Sleep is essential to clean up toxins and waste products and repair damage accumulated while awake.
