How Urinary Tract Infections Trigger Delirium in People With Dementia | Dr. Shouri Lahiri
Q: Why do infections, especially urinary tract infections, have such a profound impact on cognition?
Infections trigger an inflammatory response that can spill into the bloodstream and injure brain cells, leading to delirium, which is more likely and more severe in people with dementia due to reduced cognitive reserve.
I’m Still Me: Scott Redfern on Living With Alzheimer’s | Scott Redfern
Q: How have you balanced treatment, work, and personal identity?
I retired from my previous career, focused on treatments and memories with loved ones, stayed active through volunteering and hiking, and maintained identity through ongoing projects like writing and community work.
I’m Still Me: Scott Redfern on Living With Alzheimer’s | Scott Redfern
Q: What role does your Substack play in your life and coping with Alzheimer's?
The Substack serves as a cathartic outlet and a way to connect with others—caregivers and patients alike—while documenting the journey and lessons learned for the broader community.
I’m Still Me: Scott Redfern on Living With Alzheimer’s | Scott Redfern
Q: Why did you decide to go public about your diagnosis and journey?
On day one after diagnosis I chose to be open and share the journey to help others, publish updates, and create a resource for both patients and caregivers.
I’m Still Me: Scott Redfern on Living With Alzheimer’s | Scott Redfern
Q: When did you first notice changes, and how did you approach getting tested?
I started noticing issues about six years ago, around age 56, especially in stressful work situations. I pursued neurologist visits, MoCA testing, and genetic-related considerations, ultimately confirming amyloid deposits with an PET scan.
