As a result, non-cross border professionals, wealth advisors, and even international advisors are often unaware of them. But don’t worry, Expat Wealth ... more

  • Get Involved - you won’t regret it!

Just found this podcast and wasn’t sure what to expect, but so glad I did, because it was such an honest conversation which made me think about expats the whole expat experience in a way I hadn’t previously. I also liiked Richard’s interview style and Serra made for a great guest. I’ll be coming back to catch the rest of the series - thanks

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

90. Golden Visa or Regular Visa? Getting Real About Moving to Portugal
Q: Are most Americans using the Golden Visa, or do they pursue standard residence visas first?
John explains that he prefers working with clients who pursue the standard residence visa first (D7 or similar) and only then consider the Golden Visa if it fits their exact profile, because the Golden Visa is expensive and not always the best fit for the majority.
79. Demats, PFICs and Provident Funds: What Indians Moving to America Need to Know
Q: Is there a simple way to handle pensions and provident funds from India once you're in the US, or does it mostly depend on the status of the fund (active vs. closed) and the person's residency?
It depends on whether the fund is still actively contributed to (EPF) or a fund like the PPF with no ongoing contributions. Such accounts are reportable under FATCA/FBAR; PPF is not equal to Social Security and must be treated as a retirement account, while EPF depends on ongoing status and residency. The key is to understand if the plan is defined benefit or defined contribution and how it is reported, along with potential implications if you stop contributing after relocating.
79. Demats, PFICs and Provident Funds: What Indians Moving to America Need to Know
Q: So Indians in America, what are the most common Indian financial assets, tools, accounts that you see cropping up and how should they be treated?
Common assets include bank accounts (including non-resident Indian accounts), DMAT accounts holding mutual funds and ETFs, employer and public provident funds, and insurance policies such as ULIPs. Each asset has specific US reporting implications (FATCA/FBAR, PFIC considerations for DMAT holdings, and potential unwind costs for insurance). The guest stresses proper classification, timely reporting, and considering PFIC elections or mark-to-market treatment, with strong emphasis on planning before or early in US residency to avoid non-compliance and punitive taxation.
88. Portugal for American Expats: Golden Visas, Tax Traps and Big Rule Changes
Q: Why would someone invest in a Golden Visa if they don't plan to live in Portugal?
Because it provides freedom of movement within Schengen, allows for travel without strict 90-day limits, and offers a long-term residency pathway that can eventually lead to permanent residency or citizenship, even for those who don't reside full-time in Portugal.
84. How to Get a Second Passport: Citizenship, Residency and Why Timing Matters
Q: What are the main pathways to obtain citizenship or residency?
The main pathways are traditional immigration through formal processes, ancestry-based citizenship if there are qualifying ancestors, and investment migration where governments grant residency or citizenship in exchange for investment; some programs may provide a pathway to citizenship after meeting residency or investment criteria.
