Key tax and pension issues in Andy Burnham’s in-tray
Q: What is the government's position on shielding pensioners who rely solely on the state pension from tax?
There is a pledge to protect such pensioners, but details remain unclear about how it would be implemented and what qualifies as 'income' for taxation purposes.
Key tax and pension issues in Andy Burnham’s in-tray
Q: How do we get to the situation where the full state pension exceeds the tax-free personal allowance?
The combination of the triple lock increases and frozen tax thresholds creates fiscal drag, pushing the pension above the personal allowance and causing some pension income to be taxed.
Key tax and pension issues in Andy Burnham’s in-tray
Q: So Craig, could you firstly explain why there is lots of space over the future of the triple lock?
Craig explains the triple lock is divisive due to its cost, with polling showing split views on keeping or scrapping it; the policy's expansion makes it expensive to sustain, especially as the population ages.
Portfolio Dilemma: we tackle six investment problems
Q: What is a reasonably size position and how many stocks should I hold?
Position size depends on whether a holding is core or satellite; cores can be large (10–70%), satellites smaller (2–5%). The number of holdings should balance diversification with manageability and research time.
Portfolio Dilemma: we tackle six investment problems
Q: How should an investor approach giving up on slow or losing investments?
Assess the original reasons for buying, check if those assumptions still hold, consider a five-year horizon for funds, and use rebalancing to take profits from winners while allocating to better opportunities or different strategies.
