Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Natalie Kean of Justice in Aging on Trump's Big Ugly Bill -- One Year Later
Q: What can everyday citizens do to push back against these Medicaid cuts?
Contact members of Congress, as well as state and local officials, to advocate for preserving and strengthening Medicaid/Medicare, and to emphasize the broader community impact of care costs.
Natalie Kean of Justice in Aging on Trump's Big Ugly Bill -- One Year Later
Q: Who are the typical people affected by these new work requirements and red tape?
Working-age individuals in low-wage, often gig economy jobs without employer-sponsored insurance, including caregivers, face renewed hurdles in proving eligibility and maintaining coverage.
Natalie Kean of Justice in Aging on Trump's Big Ugly Bill -- One Year Later
Q: So basically, Medicaid was never designed as a program where you had to work to get the benefit; is that accurate?
Yes, the program was meant to provide essential health coverage to low-income individuals without imposing work-based barriers, and the evidence shows work requirements do not increase employment and can reduce access to care.
"Social Security is the Bedrock" & Prioritizing Health Care for Working Americans w/Senator Chris Van Hollen
Q: How would Medicaid and healthcare provisions fare under current policy proposals?
The senator argues that the Big Ugly Bill (2025) cuts deeply into Medicaid and ACA subsidies, harming working Americans and seniors, and he urges reversing those cuts if Democrats regain control of Congress and the White House.
"Social Security is the Bedrock" & Prioritizing Health Care for Working Americans w/Senator Chris Van Hollen
Q: What concrete steps are being proposed to shore up Social Security?
The senator supports expanding the Social Security FICA tax base by raising or adjusting the wage cap and prefers proposals that increase revenue while dedicating funds to Social Security rather than cutting benefits. He also advocates for alternative revenue like wealth taxes to shore up solvency.
