Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Do You Want to Live Past 100? w/author William J. Kole (Encore)
Q: What about ageism—will longer-living populations have more power or face more discrimination?
There is potential for greater influence, but society remains youth-oriented; ageism persists and affects policy and social dynamics, though the aging population could shift power dynamics over time.
Do You Want to Live Past 100? w/author William J. Kole (Encore)
Q: Is living to 100 desirable if health isn't preserved, or should people aim for a long health-span?
The guest notes that people age differently and that health-span matters; many value cognitive and physical function into old age, while recognizing that some people may live longer healthily, unlike others who face decline.
Do You Want to Live Past 100? w/author William J. Kole (Encore)
Q: Bill, why is this longevity boom happening and does it really affect our generation?
Bill explains it's both demographic and genetic: the Boomer generation is large, and as people live longer, the number of centenarians rises dramatically, which in turn strains Social Security and Medicare and reshapes retirement planning.
Your Facebook Questions Answered! (Plus - Trolling the Trolls)
Q: I never understood why Democrats stole a trillion dollars from Medicare; is it their piggy bank or the people who paid into it?
That framing is misinformation; there have been reforms that save money in Medicare without stealing from beneficiaries, such as policy changes and programs like the Inflation Reduction Act that enable Medicare to negotiate drug prices, though some reforms and budgetary shifts are controversial.
Your Facebook Questions Answered! (Plus - Trolling the Trolls)
Q: Why were social security payments moved to the middle of the month and how can this be changed?
Payments are staggered by birth date to avoid a single day bottleneck and to ease the processing load for the Social Security Administration; there are exceptions for those who began receiving benefits before 1997, but the general rule is based on birth dates and was implemented in 1997 at the urging of the banking industry.
