  • Disappointed

So, you just told your listeners who are over 45 and have been listening to and supporting you for years that you don’t want us. Ok, sounds great.

  • Advice good and bad

Good show, will keep listening, like the calls and some of the advice.

Terrible advice around borrowing from 401k’s…. On a specific call gave rationale that parent plus loans are 9%… didn’t mention if there are penalties from borrowing from retirement… or the loss of future growth… or the tax impact from pulling the money out… how about recommending neither option

And advice about keeping mortgages… not terrible advice but bad

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Making the Most of an Inheritance
Q: What would be a feasible plan for George given the inheritance and the goal of possibly retiring early?
A balanced plan would consider using the inheritance to reduce stress and enable a longer, more sustainable work-life; test a lower-stress job now if possible, while optimizing tax implications of the inherited IRA withdrawals over the next decade, and reassess retirement timing rather than sticking to the original 53 target.
New Job With Limited Retirement Options Part Two
Q: What about life insurance and estate planning?
Eric has a term policy and no coverage for his wife yet; they should consider increasing both policies, review estate documents (will and living trust are in place), and evaluate life insurance needs as income changes.
New Job With Limited Retirement Options Part Two
Q: What are you considering about your retirement and liquidity strategy with the new job?
The discussion centers on maintaining liquidity for the transition, potential refinancing to improve cash flow, and balancing debt repayment with building emergency funds rather than aggressively paying down mortgage in the near term.
New Job With Limited Retirement Options Part Two
Q: What are the main assets and how are they performing?
There are two rental properties delivering positive cash flow (roughly $4,000 and $1,500 per month respectively), plus an inherited IRA about $50K, a $20K HSA, a $59K 529 plan, and a small brokerage account. They're weighing whether to sell, refi, or hold and optimize for long-term retirement and liquidity.
New Job With Limited Retirement Options Part Two
Q: How much are you spending per month and what is driving those costs?
Eric explains spending is about $12,000 to $15,000 a month, with major costs including a $4,500 rent and ongoing property-related expenses, while other assets and potential income from rentals are shaping the plan.
