  • Please stop with the Thoughts on the Market Ads!

The reporting content is great once you get to it, but it’s becoming really irksome to have to listen to the same speaking Morgan Stanley’s Thoughts on the Market podcast ad — the speaking voice is incredibly annoying, inconsistent with the strong clear cadence of Marketplace, and most listeners don’t want to have to fast-forward every episode.

  • I don’t mind the ads

Marketplace, I don’t mind the ads, especially when public funding is under threat. Do what you gotta do. And thank you for all you do. You’re still the best.

  • Chock full of ads

NPR / Public Media double dipping into private advertisers on top of all the free national tax payer money they receive. This podcast is nearly 20% or more of ads. Overmonetized but I guess you can get away with it having the name Marketplace.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Homebuyers and sellers on the sidelines
Q: Explain what your concern is.
Jason Furman discusses the slowing job growth in relation to immigration policy and how fewer immigrants lead to slower job creation, impacting overall economic growth.
The Fed's next move
Q: Do these Fed interest rate cuts that we're talking about, is that going to show up in mortgages, car loans, etc.?
Somewhat, but not necessarily one for one. The Fed does not control longer term interest rates like mortgage rates; they are influenced by Fed policy and expectations for inflation.
The Fed's next move
Q: So basically, everyone expects the Fed to cut interest rates at its meeting this week. But like how much and how far are they going to go?
It's pretty well telegraphed that they will cut interest rates by a quarter of a percent this week. The real question is whether it signals the start of an adjustment in interest rates or whether it will be taken on a meeting by meeting basis.
Is there such a thing as too much transparency?
Q: Do you believe that the desire to protect American workers and the need for foreign workers in some situations, is that appropriately balanced in the current US immigration system?
No, the current balance is completely off, as labor force growth is critical for U.S. economic expansion but is being hindered by restrictive policies that could lead to significant negative impacts on growth.
Is there such a thing as too much transparency?
Q: Why would a company like Hyundai or its subcontractors choose to use these visas and what were they?
The South Korean workers were on B1 visas, which raised legal questions when they were detained for unlawful activity according to ICE, though this may have been an incorrect interpretation of the law.
