  • So Sad

The pprogram has turned more and more opinion over the years and it overshadows the headlines to the detriment of young listeners. Sadly the value is gone and the conclusions harm followers.

  • One of the best!

Great content, delivered concisely & professionally. Keep up the good work, y’all. A gentle reminder to other listeners, there’s a fast forward button to mitigate your frustration with the ads. Super easy & quite effective.

  • Please stop with the Thoughts on the Market Ads!

The reporting content is great once you get to it, but it’s becoming really irksome to have to listen to the same speaking Morgan Stanley’s Thoughts on the Market podcast ad — the speaking voice is incredibly annoying, inconsistent with the strong clear cadence of Marketplace, and most listeners don’t want to have to fast-forward every episode.

  • I don’t mind the ads

Marketplace, I don’t mind the ads, especially when public funding is under threat. Do what you gotta do. And thank you for all you do. You’re still the best.

  • Chock full of ads

NPR / Public Media double dipping into private advertisers on top of all the free national tax payer money they receive. This podcast is nearly 20% or more of ads. Overmonetized but I guess you can get away with it having the name Marketplace.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

How proving you're "not a robot" could be training AI
Q: Is this just something freaky that Meta cooked up, or is this part of some larger trend on how we train our AIs?
It's part of a broader, long-running trend where companies use various forms of user and employee data to train AI, with renewed focus on what data is captured and how it's used for model improvement.
The U.S. spending spree continues
Q: Are retail sales higher because consumers are resilient and buying more, or because prices are higher and the stuff is more expensive?
Both factors are at play: gas prices have pushed up overall sales, while other categories remain resilient, and tax refunds may have contributed to recent gains.
Insurers ease up on prior authorization
Q: What is Iran's economy like right now?
The economy is under significant strain due to war-related destruction, high inflation (over 100% in the last month), and shortages, with limited future planning and ongoing sanctions and disruption to infrastructure.
The context behind 115,000 new jobs
Q: So this jobs report is from April. So it includes a solid month of higher gas prices from the war with Iran. Is that showing up at all?
Julia Coronado says it isn't showing up in the headline numbers; instead weather effects and seasonal hiring are driving the gains, with wage growth remaining soft and participation dipping, signaling a stable but not overwhelmingly strong labor market.
Fewer Americans are earning a living wage
Q: How widespread are Tesla's driverless vehicles right now?
Not very widespread; only in a small number of cities with just over a dozen actively in service, and a recent rollout in Dallas and Houston remains limited with very few vehicles operational.
