Reviews

4.5 out of 5 stars from 1.3k ratings
  • Interesting topics, mixed reviews on hosts

This was my favorite of the Marketplace shows until Stephanie Hughes began hosting. Her vocal affectations are distracting. She toggles between her natural alto and squeaky clarinet. It sounds forced and takes me out of the reporting. Just embrace the alto even if it’s monotone; stop the squeaking. Or bring back a combination of Nova and Meghan—love them.

Also, I would pay for a subscription to listen to Marketplace shows ad-free. PLEASE.

  • Just combine multiple shows

I love and support all the Marketplace shows. Phenomenal reporting. But their short shows are just too ad heavy minute for minute. Would be great to get MP Tech segments in a longer, combined format so the ads are quite so prevalent compared to the content.

  • 50% of episode is ads???

Listened to an 8 minute episode and I kid you not, 4 minutes of it is ads, including 90sec before the episode intro. Will not listen again.

  • Decent, but far too many ads (>50% of play time)

I just finished listening to today’s 8 minute podcast. Approximately 4 minutes and 15 seconds of it was advertisements and that’s not including the necessary fluff and introductory stuff. This podcast is now literally more advertising than it is content, which is sad to see (since I’m sure it’s necessary now).

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Why this Silicon Valley priest wants to teach AI right from wrong
Q: Do you see a role for AI in church work, and are there lines you need to draw around that usage?
AI can assist with administrative tasks and sermon preparation, freeing up pastors for direct care, but humans must remain the agents and keep the core creative pastoral role; ethics and discernment guide its use.
Why this Silicon Valley priest wants to teach AI right from wrong
Q: So what was the nature of your collaboration on the Claude Constitution with Anthropic?
The collaboration involved reviewing and commenting on an early version of the Claude Constitution, contributing ethical and theological perspectives to guide the chatbot's personality and behavior.
Why Siri AI isn't coming to the EU
Q: Maria, catch us up, what kinds of rules did the CFTC propose?
The CFTC proposed rules were focused on increasing transparency and reducing misuse in prediction markets, including requiring disclosures like a bettor's employer to prevent insider trading and ensure fair play in sensitive bets such as geopolitical events or corporate performance.
Snap's new smart glasses received mixed reactions — mainly on aesthetics
Q: All right, Paresh, what do you think? You're going to rush out and get a pair?
Paresh responds that while the glasses are technically interesting, the high price and bulky form factor will limit immediate consumer adoption, and notes that the technology could mature into more practical applications and future hardware iterations.
Are our electric grids too big to function?
Q: How plausible is it that data centers could pay for the infrastructure they need to operate?
The guest explains that there are two pathways under consideration: direct payments for power plants and for transmission lines, but the broader model often involves spreading transmission costs across ratepayers, which complicates who bears most of the burden.
