Reviews

4.5 out of 5 stars from 1.4k ratings
  • Boring. Reminds me of the typical NPR show.

I’m sure the host is trying the best that she can, but host and writer talent makes a difference.

It is just too boring to listen to. Like someone having a coffee with someone else and casually talking about current events. The kind of conversation that starts with, “Did you hear…”.

  • Truth Finds a Way 👏

Great to source on American markets that speaks to investors through a critical lens.

In an age when US media are constantly being corrupted (by crypto•com and other CCP ventures), this podcast still helps listeners find real economic signals without the noise. May their future be long and prosperous 🙏💕

  • Interesting topics, mixed reviews on hosts

This was my favorite of the Marketplace shows until Stephanie Hughes began hosting. Her vocal affectations are distracting. She toggles between her natural alto and squeaky clarinet. It sounds forced and takes me out of the reporting. Just embrace the alto even if it’s monotone; stop the squeaking. Or bring back a combination of Nova and Meghan—love them.

Also, I would pay for a subscription to listen to Marketplace shows ad-free. PLEASE.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Cyberattacks on U.S. water systems raise concerns about security
Q: Recently, we saw the state of New York put $9 million towards strengthening the security of its water systems. Is that something we should be seeing across the board and is it enough?
Yes, but it's only a start. Basic cybersecurity fundamentals remain under-addressed, and sustained investment—both financial and in skilled personnel—across the federal, state, and local levels is needed to build resilience and ensure secure operation of critical infrastructure.
OpenAI to offer safety features for teens using ChatGPT
Q: What do you think about OpenAI turning safety features on by default for teens, and how effective do you think they will be?
The default-on approach could be a strong signal about safety priorities, but effectiveness will depend on the fidelity of age verification, the quality of content filters, and how users game the system; there's a trade-off between protecting younger users and maintaining a smooth learning experience.
Why the Trump administration plans to boost funding for subsea cables
Q: So how would kind of a partnership work here between the federal government and these private companies that finance then own them?
Murphy explains that the government partnership aims to align national security priorities with commercial capabilities, leveraging private ownership and investment by hyperscalers to extend connectivity while maintaining oversight and security considerations.
Substack CEO on the platform’s new AI detector
Q: What is the 'how I make this statement' feature, and why did Substack add a transparency note for creators?
It provides context about how a piece was produced, including whether AI tools were used, to align reader expectations with the author's process.
Substack CEO on the platform’s new AI detector
Q: AI detection is also a form of AI, and it is not perfect; how concerned are you about mislabeling content?
We take that seriously and believe Pangram is the best tool on the market, but detector errors can happen; there is a pathway to report mistakes and adjust labeling when needed.
