Reviews

4.5 out of 5 stars from 1.3k ratings
  • Interesting topics, mixed reviews on hosts

This was my favorite of the Marketplace shows until Stephanie Hughes began hosting. Her vocal affectations are distracting. She toggles between her natural alto and squeaky clarinet. It sounds forced and takes me out of the reporting. Just embrace the alto even if it’s monotone; stop the squeaking. Or bring back a combination of Nova and Meghan—love them.

Also, I would pay for a subscription to listen to Marketplace shows ad-free. PLEASE.

  • Just combine multiple shows

I love and support all the Marketplace shows. Phenomenal reporting. But their short shows are just too ad heavy minute for minute. Would be great to get MP Tech segments in a longer, combined format so the ads are quite so prevalent compared to the content.

  • 50% of episode is ads???

Listened to an 8 minute episode and I kid you not, 4 minutes of it is ads, including 90sec before the episode intro. Will not listen again.

  • Decent, but far too many ads (>50% of play time)

I just finished listening to today’s 8 minute podcast. Approximately 4 minutes and 15 seconds of it was advertisements and that’s not including the necessary fluff and introductory stuff. This podcast is now literally more advertising than it is content, which is sad to see (since I’m sure it’s necessary now).

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Wall Street sets its sights on an AI futures market
Q: Tell me what those [compute futures] are.
They are contracts that let you lock in the future cost of renting GPU time, similar to how oil futures work, with the goal of reducing price uncertainty for AI workloads.
What happened to alternative energy investments from the 1970s?
Q: So, what happened instead?
The episode explains a shift in policy and market dynamics after the 1970s' initial surge, including the Reagan-era moves away from aggressive renewables incentives and subsequent reorientation toward oil, which slowed broad adoption but set the stage for later growth in solar and wind.
Startups are betting on a legalized peptide market
Q: What are the health risks with peptides, and how are companies addressing safety concerns?
Zara Stone explains that many peptides are still unproven in humans, with potential cancer risks and infections if misused. Most studies are in animals, so companies justify marketing as research‑use‑only, while not providing medical advice. There is ongoing consumer risk due to limited data and the lack of clear regulatory pathways.
Amid AI backlash, brands are emphasizing the human side of marketing
Q: How do you see AI affecting the marketing industry's future particularly regarding trust and perception?
There is a delicate balance; AI can support ideation and efficiency, but there is concern over a slippery slope where end products lose human nuance, so many marketers advocate for using AI mainly as a backstage tool rather than the face of campaigns.
Amid AI backlash, brands are emphasizing the human side of marketing
Q: Why do you think people want to see the humans and understand the process behind ads?
People are drawn to storytelling and authenticity; as AI becomes more prevalent, audiences crave the nuance, struggle, and personal touch that only humans can convey in marketing content.
