  • Boring. Reminds me of the typical NPR show.

I’m sure the host is trying the best that she can, but host and writer talent makes a difference.

It is just too boring to listen to. Like someone having a coffee with someone else and casually talking about current events. The kind of conversation that starts with, “Did you hear…”.

  • Truth Finds a Way 👏

Great to source on American markets that speaks to investors through a critical lens.

In an age when US media are constantly being corrupted (by crypto•com and other CCP ventures), this podcast still helps listeners find real economic signals without the noise. May their future be long and prosperous 🙏💕

  • Interesting topics, mixed reviews on hosts

This was my favorite of the Marketplace shows until Stephanie Hughes began hosting. Her vocal affectations are distracting. She toggles between her natural alto and squeaky clarinet. It sounds forced and takes me out of the reporting. Just embrace the alto even if it’s monotone; stop the squeaking. Or bring back a combination of Nova and Meghan—love them.

Also, I would pay for a subscription to listen to Marketplace shows ad-free. PLEASE.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

How AI nudify apps are proliferating on social media
Q: Have they responded to concerns about enforcement and take-downs?
Yes, platforms have reached out with requests for URLs and keywords, and app stores have been more active in takedowns and adjusting settings, though the ecosystem still persists in less obvious forms.
How AI nudify apps are proliferating on social media
Q: You identified that platforms like YouTube, X, Facebook, are helping to promote these services. Have any of those companies engaged with your report after publishing it?
Yes. Some of the platforms that were mentioned, and even some that were not mentioned, have reached out afterwards asking for URLs and keywords used, to ensure they can take down the content. App stores have also been active in taking down some of these apps or adjusting their settings.
AI firms are going back on their safety promises
Q: What do you see as the biggest challenges to achieving robust safety in AI development?
The biggest challenges include the concentration of frontier development in a few countries, insufficient regulatory knowledge among policymakers, and the difficulty of aligning rapid technical progress with credible, universally accepted safety frameworks. Without coordinated international dialogue, safety measures risk being fragmented and less effective.
A modern-day odyssey through AI chatbot hellscape
Q: What is sludge in the context of customer service, and how is it evolving with AI?
Sludge is the persistent barrier created by convoluted automated systems that keep customers from reaching a real human, and AI has given it a newer, more pervasive face by layering hold music, chatbots, and complicated claim processes that hinder resolution.
Uncanny AI: Why AI bots remember random, sometimes useless information
Q: What should we be mindful of as we interact with large language models, given their different thinking patterns from humans?
We should be aware that models use context and memory to generate responses, which can lead to surprising or inappropriate recalls. It's important to understand how memory files influence chat behavior and to manage privacy and safe-guard settings accordingly.
