Reviews

4.5 out of 5 stars from 1.3k ratings
  • Interesting topics, mixed reviews on hosts

This was my favorite of the Marketplace shows until Stephanie Hughes began hosting. Her vocal affectations are distracting. She toggles between her natural alto and squeaky clarinet. It sounds forced and takes me out of the reporting. Just embrace the alto even if it’s monotone; stop the squeaking. Or bring back a combination of Nova and Meghan—love them.

Also, I would pay for a subscription to listen to Marketplace shows ad-free. PLEASE.

  • Just combine multiple shows

I love and support all the Marketplace shows. Phenomenal reporting. But their short shows are just too ad heavy minute for minute. Would be great to get MP Tech segments in a longer, combined format so the ads are quite so prevalent compared to the content.

  • 50% of episode is ads???

Listened to an 8 minute episode and I kid you not, 4 minutes of it is ads, including 90sec before the episode intro. Will not listen again.

  • Decent, but far too many ads (>50% of play time)

I just finished listening to today’s 8 minute podcast. Approximately 4 minutes and 15 seconds of it was advertisements and that’s not including the necessary fluff and introductory stuff. This podcast is now literally more advertising than it is content, which is sad to see (since I’m sure it’s necessary now).

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Meta wants AI chats to be private
Q: Why is WhatsApp introducing private AI chats now?
To address users' privacy concerns and differentiate from rivals by offering a chat experience that cannot be trained on user data or reviewed by human trainers, while still providing a practical, private AI assistant.
Canada to share its hydropower with Northeast U.S.
Q: I want to ask a little about the history. Tell me more about how hydropower developed in Quebec.
Hydro-Québec was built as a province-wide monopoly in the 1960s, leading to massive dam projects in the north to boost the economy and provide cheap electricity, but those developments also flooded indigenous lands and required ongoing renegotiation of local consent and compensation; the system eventually produced a large supply of inexpensive power that has shaped regional energy politics for decades.
Study finds AI is making the internet more artificially happy
Q: You expected to find an increase in misinformation with the rise of AI-generated writing, but you didn't find that. Can you explain what you looked for and what you found?
We hired fact checkers to review claims and evidence, and while we explored several hypotheses about accuracy, we did not observe a significant overall rise in factually incorrect claims over time within our data, though we note that this area requires more analysis.
Anthropic’s new, powerful allies: Elon Musk and SpaceX
Q: What did you think when you first heard about this deal?
The guest described being surprised by the alignment between Anthropic and SpaceX, noting it as an odd pairing given Anthropic's competition with OpenAI and Musk's ongoing legal actions, and highlighting the strategic signaling behind Musk's move.
Does AI save time in police work?
Q: What did Axon say in response to your reporting?
Axon argues that hundreds of thousands of minutes are saved and cites broad usage across more than 18,000 agencies and hard data supporting time savings.
