Reviews

4.7 out of 5 stars from 8k ratings
  • Uninformed host, Uninformed guests, uninsightful commentary

The topic of discussion interested me which led to me listening, but honestly it had very little to no value. The host is poorly informed, but very opinionated about topics. The guest honestly didn’t have much insight or real original or novel thoughts. The discussion was surface level and lacked any interesting context or insight. Ignorant biases were pervasive in the discussion and frankly colored the entirety of the podcast. Should have known better given that it is produced under the ringer ... more

  • Great show

Here’s a cliche, folks going on any form of content they don’t side with politically and just automatically giving it one star. Anyone who does this is ridiculous. This is a great show no matter where you sit politically. Even if you like Trump you should be able to listen to someone who doesn’t, because he has a lot of interesting things to say about everything else in the world. Keep up the great work Derek !

  • Has gotten lazy

Used to really like this podcast but feels like Derek never record anymore. Between the long time off to write his book and now two months of reruns, it’s just not a dependable pod.

  • So Brave!

Looks like Thompson is joining an ABUNDANCE of right wing boot lickers on Bari Weiss’ CBS! Unmasking himself as the mole for the billionaire thieving class he has always been. Congratulations on coming clean, Derek!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

How Metrics Make Us Miserable
Q: Could you illustrate with a concrete example from your own life or work where you successfully reframed a metric to better reflect your values?
In the classroom, the professor experimented with reshaping grading by incorporating student-designed criteria and collaborative analyses, which aligned assessment with shared goals rather than a single arbitrary standard.
How Metrics Make Us Miserable
Q: How do you suggest people live in a world dominated by measurable outcomes without losing what they value most?
By being deliberate about which metrics to adopt, reprogramming or tailoring scoring systems to serve personal purposes, and by maintaining space for meaningful, non-measurable aspects like relationships, joy, and intrinsic motivation.
How Metrics Make Us Miserable
Q: What is the explicit thesis of your book The Score, and what is the underground message you want to leave with readers?
The explicit thesis centers on value capture: metrics and scoring systems can be useful but dangerous when they hijack our values; the deeper message is to guard against letting external measures rule your mind, and to keep a dialogue with your own values and with what is genuinely valuable that cannot be fully captured by numbers.
Trump Is Doubling Down on Iran. How Should Democrats Respond?
Q: How should Democrats approach immigration policy in light of the current political environment?
Support a balanced approach that includes immigration reform and secure borders, resist purely punitive or maximalist positions, and recognize the need to appeal to working and middle-class voters by showing how policy can help them thrive.
Trump Is Doubling Down on Iran. How Should Democrats Respond?
Q: What should Democrats focus on in messaging regarding the Iran situation?
Keep the message simple and focused on war as a choice, and emphasize domestic priorities—lower prices, opportunity, and stability—while avoiding overreach in narrating the crisis; be selective about where to push back and how to frame opposition.
