  • Vulnerability & Community

Beautiful conversations that foster a safe place for vulnerability and create community. The hosts willingness to share about their personal experiences blooms real open discussions with the guests. The episodes provide equal insight into the industries the guests create within, and the shared humanity that unifies us living within a capitalist structure.

  • Brilliant + reassuring candor

New favorite podcast— great guests, incredibly timely takes on evergreen factors of choosing a creative life/ career. Hard to describe how much insight, humor, and non-corny vulnerability these two + their guests bring to every episode. Deep dives punctuated by levity and breakthroughs that feel earned rather than performed. Loved the Tompkins and Loftus episodes most. Glad every episode ends on a note of sane uplift.

Q: What advice would you give freelancers navigating journalism today?
Diversify income sources, consider newsletters and one-off tips, and be willing to work with smaller outlets or independent platforms; maintain rigorous verification and resist pressure to dilute truth for access or funding.

Q: How did the environment of ownership influence editorial direction and newsroom morale?
Ownership changes and buyouts shifted the newsroom culture, with leadership decisions and editorial board changes affecting how topics like race, democracy, and journalism ethics were framed, leading to disillusionment among investigative reporters and editors.

Q: What was it like to publish a major investigative piece under intense editorial pressure to alter it?
The journalist faced repeated rounds of edits that weakened the piece; ultimately, after resisting and threatening to take it elsewhere, the piece remained publishable, but the process highlighted tensions between editors and reporters and raised concerns about editorial interference.

Q: Can you put together a rough timeline of what happened before the mass layoffs and buyouts at The Washington Post?

What If Your Endgame Isn't to Get Bigger? with Mike Draper
Q: What was it that let you know you could do things differently at scale?
It happened when Draper realized that his in-the-moment sales hustle in the East and wholesale checks from stores showed him there was potential to move beyond selling out of a trunk, and the right timing plus a fast, locally responsive production loop could support rapid growth without following the traditional corporate path.
