  • A Connecticut Yankee loving Judge Wise’s approach to history of a very romantic state.

I wish I had Judge Wise’s insights into Texas history when I was stationed across Texas before deployment to Southeast Asia during Vietnam War. My wife and I have returned on vacation and made a point to visit sites The Judge highlighted in his podcasts. See you down the road and God bless Texas and Connecticut.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep 148: Governor Richard Coke, Texan: An interview with Rosser Coke Newton
Q: What surprised you most during your research into Coke and his era?
I was struck by the contrast between Coke's stern, disciplined early life and his later role in stabilizing Texas after a decade of upheaval, especially how his education and values from Williamsburg influenced his long career in Texas politics.
Ep 148: Governor Richard Coke, Texan: An interview with Rosser Coke Newton
Q: Richard Coke's leadership style, how would you summarize his approach to governance?
His approach centered on decentralizing power from the governor to counties and cities, a conservative fiscal policy to reduce debt, and a push to restore local control after Reconstruction, which together stabilized Texas and shaped its governance for decades.
EP. 146: Getting to Know Governor Oran Roberts, the “Old Alcalde.” An Interview with Dr. John Adams. Part 2
Q: Why don't you place for us, place Oran Roberts in Texas history for us now that we're going to get the book and learn more about him?
Roberts is a complicated but immensely consequential figure, whose influence spans governance, the judiciary, and higher education, enduring for over fifty years and shaping Texas education policy and institutional structures in ways that remain evident in the state's universities and legal education system.
Ep. 145: Getting to Know Governor Oran Roberts, the “Old Alcalde.” An Interview with Dr. John Adams. Part 1.
Q: What attracted you to Oran Roberts as a subject for this book?
Roberts connects a broad arc of Texas history—from the Republic era through the Civil War and Reconstruction—and his role as a lawmaker, jurist, and strategist in secession makes him a pivotal, underexplored figure whose influence on higher education and Texas institutions is profound, which drew me to study him in depth.
The Texas Rangers: Milton H. West- from Ranger to Congressman
Q: Was he used as an example to you and your siblings?
Yes, he was, reflecting the family's legacy of service to Texas and the values instilled by his ancestors.
