I am a big fan of What on Earth - love the staff and that it’s on CBC. The re-freezing arctic ice piece was interesting and inciteful and re-hearing Patti Gonia’s interview was beautiful and also timely as I’ve just discovered Yo Yo Ma’s new podcast with WNYC Our Common Nature - maybe you’ve already got him lined up for future episode - keep up the great work.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

If you hate plastic, here’s what you can do about it
Q: What does that mean? How about giving money to all of our schools so they can install dish washing equipment and buy real dishes?
Giving funding for schools to reduce plastic use through reusables is essential for change, especially in communal settings.
If you hate plastic, here’s what you can do about it
Q: How did we get to this point where plastic is just so pervasive in our daily lives?
Nearly half of all plastic ever created has been only since the year 2007, primarily due to hydrofracking and the use of toxic chemicals in production.
What penguins (and their poo) tell us about climate change
Q: Can you explain what 'sentinel beings' mean and how understanding them can help us understand climate change risks?
Penguins are considered sentinels of the southern ocean because they detect changes in the ocean that we're not seeing, helping us understand environmental risks.
What penguins (and their poo) tell us about climate change
Q: What were the key findings then?
Our key finding is that penguins have changed their timing of their breeding season at record speed, up to two weeks in just ten years, which is indicative of broader ecosystem changes.
What penguins (and their poo) tell us about climate change
Q: Why were you studying these Antarctic penguins?
We are really worried about Antarctica in general and penguins in particular because it's the second fastest warming area in the world after the Arctic.
