  • Culture war nonsense

I was really enjoying this until the conversation involving pulling his daughter out of school because he was afraid the teacher would indoctrinate her.

  • The Star Wars Report got me through my 20s. Looks like Riley will accompany my 30s as well.

I had a pretty harrowing 20s. I struggled with relationships, career, school, friendships, a literal broken back and a brother who survived cancer…twice…but Podcasts - in particular one Riley Blanton at the Star Wars Report - helped me stay sane in the topsy turvey time that was the first phase of my adulthood. Hyped me up for the beginning of Disney Star Wars and found a group of people that if we were closer geographically I think we could be real life friends. As the Star Wars Report came to ... more

Only a few episodes in but I’m really enjoying this podcast. I’m loving the deeper dive into the philosophy undergirding our pop culture and it’s impact on our lives. I’m going to give this podcast a few hundred episodes to see how it goes, and you probably should too.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Reviewing "Superman": Virtue or Vice?
Q: What did you think of it?
The guests explore the film's meta-commentary on heroism, noting both its visual strengths and its challenges in delivering a traditional moral core, while considering how it reinterprets Superman for younger audiences.
Tolkien, Virtue, and the Good Life
Q: How did Tolkien's use of virtue ethics in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings shape your interpretation of his moral project?
Tolkien uses fiction as a vehicle to exemplify virtues—courage, humility, sacrifice—through memorable characters and adventures, which Snyder argues is a deliberate ethical program rather than mere storytelling, blending classical ethics with Christian imagination.
Tolkien, Virtue, and the Good Life
Q: What is it about the atmosphere at Oxford and your academic background that connected you to Tolkien?
As a medievalist with training in Latin, Old English, and French, Snyder found in Tolkien a historian's lens and a chance to translate and engage with medieval sources, bringing a historian's sensibility to Tolkien's world rather than just literary analysis.
