  • My favorite podcast

I’ve been listening to AoM for probably 12 years now. It is the only podcast that I can say that about, and while my tastes on other things change, this one has been so useful to me throughout my life. I’m in my mid 40s, about the same age as Brett and it is sort of like we are growing up at the same rate, so everything always feels relevant throughout the different seasons of life. There’s something for everyone in this podcast and it isn’t as male specific as you might think.

  • New Lessons

I discovered Brett in 2014-ish when I was still in high school. Twelve years later, his articles and podcast still teach me new things. I also enjoy the longevity of his show. It bears fruits that newer shows can’t. For example, in episode #1116, Brett talked to Manoush Zomorodi about her new book, The Body Electric. Manoush was also in episode #342 back in 2017 discussing her last book, Bored and Brilliant. She and Brett discussed the similarities between the books, and they discussed what had ... more

  • Reliably great

I’ve been on the road most days for work for the last 9 years and there’s only one podcast that I’ve stuck with the whole time: AOM. Check out the website and their substack Dying Breed for more thoughtful, interesting, and edifying work.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Belonging Without Conforming — The Path From Pseudo Self to Solid Self
Q: What were you seeing in the broader culture that gave you this hunch that the tension between self and group might be causing problems?
The guest observed a paradox where people were both more selfish and more tribal, with conformity pressures within groups and online spaces contributing to fragmentation rather than authentic belonging.
The Retirement Trap — Should You Really Stop Working at 65?
Q: How can delaying retirement by a few years change financial math and quality of life?
Working a few extra years reduces the required savings for a given lifestyle, lowers anxiety about retirement, and provides more time for relationships and experiences, making it feasible to enjoy life now while still planning for the future.
The Retirement Trap — Should You Really Stop Working at 65?
Q: What are the main problems with the traditional 65 retirement model?
People experience stress and anxiety about stopping work, sacrifice health and family experiences, and face unrealistic financial targets to fund decades of retirement when life expectancy is much longer today.
The Retirement Trap — Should You Really Stop Working at 65?
Q: What is the historical origin of our modern idea of retirement?
The concept originated in 19th-century Europe, with social insurance planning in Germany that set retirement ages, initially at 70 and later moved to 65 as life expectancy changed, creating a model that assumed short retirements and longer working lives.
How to Try Again
Q: What is the most reliable tactic for sustaining effort?
Two core tactics are the 'shower theory' (allowing for slips and starting again) and the 'half-assing' approach (doing the minimum viable effort consistently to keep moving).
