  • Pretty Funny, Also 🤔

Good show. Undoubtedly the funniest of the “revolutions” podcasts. Lots of informative and insightful content. Though I fear they may never know the genius that is Wu Tang v Ninja (1985), aka Ninja Hunter.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

EP. 886: HOUSING FIRST? ft. SAM RUSSEK
Q: Are Cities or states pushing for punitive measures as a response to homelessness, and what can policymakers do differently?
The discussion notes recurring debates about criminalization or mandatory shelters, suggesting more participatory, rights-based approaches that prioritize tenant autonomy and long-term stability over quick numbers.
EP. 886: HOUSING FIRST? ft. SAM RUSSEK
Q: What about the role of counts and definitions in shaping policy outcomes?
Counts that exclude people living in cars or in unstable situations can artificially lower homelessness figures, shaping policy priorities around metrics rather than lived experience.
EP. 886: HOUSING FIRST? ft. SAM RUSSEK
Q: What exactly does Housing First promise, and what do people misunderstanding it tend to miss?
Housing First aims to quickly house homeless individuals and then provide supportive services, but critics argue that without robust follow-up and accountability, the approach can miss long-term needs and reduce incentives for broader systemic reforms.
EP. 886: HOUSING FIRST? ft. SAM RUSSEK
Q: What made housing your beat? Is it personal experience or professional interest?
Sam explains that a mix of personal history and professional exposure—especially witnessing eviction crises during COVID and in Houston—drew him to housing as a central issue, where policy intersects with daily survival.
EP. 885: CLEAN UP ON AISLE FIVE: ESSENTIAL WORK AND POVERTY WAGES ft. ANN LARSON
Q: How does debt function as a tool of labor discipline in these industries?
Wages stagnate while the cost of living rises, so people rely on debt (credit cards, loans) to fill the gap, which in turn disciplines workers by tightening financial pressure and limiting mobility.
