  • Love the show, guests a mixed bag

Love the podcast, topics, and usually the wide array of guests on here, but please never invite Matt Stoller on again. He had nothing constructive to add, made most of his arguments out of reactivity and bad faith, and was ridiculously disrespectful throughout. He also completely rewrites Civil Rights history and is egregiously ignorant of the history of policing in the US for someone with such bitter bone to pick. What an infuriating waste of an episode.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 557 - International Law vs. World War III (w/ Dr. Annelle Sheline)
Q: What did you mean when you suggested that international law was a fiction used to police the global south while the north enjoyed exemptions?
I meant that the enforcement of international norms often seems selective, applying stricter standards to weaker states while powerful actors evade accountability, which undermines legitimacy and fuels cynicism about the system.
Episode 557 - International Law vs. World War III (w/ Dr. Annelle Sheline)
Q: In the face of all these failures and wars, is there a credible path to a more effective international law that actually restrains great powers?
There isn't a simple path, but there is a push to strengthen multilateral institutions, expand participation from the global south, and reform veto dynamics in the UN Security Council so that the law has teeth beyond symbolic statements.
Episode 557 - International Law vs. World War III (w/ Dr. Annelle Sheline)
Q: So what, I mean, you're working on this at the Quincy Institute. I mean, what is the plan?
The plan is to explore how to reform international institutions like the UN and to consider how to reconstitute international law in a way that reflects rising powers, while acknowledging the current system's flaws and the need for enforceable norms rather than mere rhetoric.
Episode 545 Promo - Loneliness at the End of Empire (w/ Dr. Gabor Maté)
Q: What do you recommend to people? How are you contending with this moment?
Dr. Maté suggests that while he acknowledges the darkness, there's a cyclical nature to human history, and he emphasizes the enduring human values of compassion and justice despite challenging times.
Episode 528 - #NotAllMen (w/ Ella Davi & Ryan Grim)
Q: How should young boys, like the ones that Ella went to school with, be held accountable?
Ella emphasized the need for better role models and social accountability, highlighting the importance of education around acceptable behavior.
