  • Great podcast for digging into interesting areas of primary education

Always a good listen! Informative and well-read guests who discuss recent research in a clear and accessible way. I have taken so much from the literacy and PD episodes that have helped crystallise my own thinking. Highly recommended.

  • A Weekly Treat

Love this podcast and the variety of excellent guests. I’ve deepened my understanding of reading and writing instruction but also gained new knowledge in other subject areas like maths and geography. It’s also good to see how primary ed flows into high school learning. Doesn’t hurt that the hosts’ accents are like honey down your ears! (‘Striny’ Aussie here)

  • Valuable Insights

I am quite new to the podcast and am ‘binge’ listening to catch up. I have been a primary teacher for over 30 years and still learn something new every episode. Keep up the good work.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Why behaviour feels harder than ever
Q: So Charles, it's lovely to see you again. How are you?
I'm well, thanks. Happy to be back and looking forward to discussing how behavior has impacted teaching and what can be done about it.
The Difficult Questions About Teaching Reading
Q: What are practical steps for a teacher moving into a Year 1-2 class with a wide attainment range when it comes to phonics and reading?
Begin by assessing the individual components of reading (code knowledge, blending, fluency) and decide whether to target each pupil by grouping them based on those specific needs. Use flow diagrams or simple categorization to plan interventions, and ensure that any intervention frees up time for essential reading practice while maintaining access to other subject areas. The goal is to tailor instruction to the pupil's core area of struggle without sacrificing exposure to the rest of the curriculum.
Beyond Firefighting: Building Better SEND Provision
Q: Where did your vision for SEND provision come from and who is responsible for guiding the direction within the trust?
The vision is a shared, trust-wide commitment to equality and joint responsibility; it comes from a collaborative leadership approach where Sencos, LA coordinators, and academy leaders contribute to a unified strategy that applies across all academies.
Vision Into Practice: How Shaftesbury Park Built a Bilingual Curriculum
Q: What are the biggest tensions or challenges in sustaining this model?
Balancing workload and leadership time, ensuring long-term commitment from governance, and maintaining inclusivity for all families while keeping a multi-year plan that doesn't waver under pressure or changes in staff.
Vision Into Practice: How Shaftesbury Park Built a Bilingual Curriculum
Q: What does bilingual instruction look like day-to-day in your setting?
It blends English and French throughout the day, with mornings in English and afternoons shifted toward French, coupled with topic-based learning and consistent use of a French-speaking teacher in each class to build authentic language use and grammar.
