  • Not sure I’d recommend it

Susan Wise Bauer has a great perspective on homeschool! Unfortunately, there is a lot of time spent on her dissecting and reviewing her fundamentalist childhood. Which obviously that colors a lot of what she says. But I do think that could be helpful for those who had a similar upbringing. For those of us that didn’t, it’s a bit redundant and takes up way too much time. Less religion talk, more about actual schooling!

  • WTM

I was excited to find this podcast however in the episode I’m listening to now Susan and her co host are bashing Hilsdale for being a conservative school. Can you show me any public school that doesn’t teach extreme leftist ideologies? Or university for that matter ? Are conservatives not allowed to have their space too?

Edit: I’m currently listening to the episode with Julie Bogart, and they start the episode off by talking about how Julie was kicked out of a conference for being too progressi... more

  • Such a breath of fresh air

I was homeschooled from 1st-12th grades and I am homeschooling my children now. It has been very difficult for me to find resources that were not heavily religious. While Susan Wise Bauer is unashamedly Christian, she does not let it cloud her vision when discussing academic topics. She pushes back when people are radical on both ends of the spectrum. I told my husband just yesterday, I love how I can’t tell where he stands politically because sometimes she says things that seem left-leaning... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

A Life of Learning w/ Colleen Sharpe
Q: Do you have a regret? Do you have something that if you could go back and do it again, knowing what you now know, you would definitely do differently?
Colleen wishes she had pulled back earlier from overloading her children with too many activities. She realized that while planning on paper seemed manageable, actual life was more complex and required flexibility and adaptation to meet her children's needs.
A Life of Learning w/ Colleen Sharpe
Q: Colleen, you talked a little bit about finding the well-trained mind, but talk a little bit about homeschooling generally and why you decided that it was the right path for your family.
Colleen explains her gradual journey into homeschooling was influenced by her mother, a teacher, and a friend who homeschooled. Initially skeptical, she found inspiration in educational resources and developed a passion for teaching her children essential skills while adapting to their needs as they grew.
Multilingual, Multicultural, Multigenerational Homeschooling w/ Rachel G. from Seven in All
Q: Can you identify something that you tried or started and didn't work out?
I would say my homeschool experience was my own and I am on the gifted side of neurodivergent, and not all of my siblings had the same experience, as there were clashes of personalities for sure in any big family.
Multilingual, Multicultural, Multigenerational Homeschooling w/ Rachel G. from Seven in All
Q: What if any fears did you have or concerns did you have when you started homeschooling your own children?
I think second-generation homeschoolers sometimes have a bit of a superpower because we have this experience of seeing mom and dad do this thing, homeschool and graduate many children over many years with far fewer resources than are available today.
Multilingual, Multicultural, Multigenerational Homeschooling w/ Rachel G. from Seven in All
Q: Did you like homeschooling and was there any time as you were growing up that you didn't like homeschooling or you wished you were going to public school?
I took to academic learning very easily and I loved homeschooling because it allowed me to just fly through at my own pace and do what I wanted. I appreciated the freedom immensely.
