Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Harriet Walter, Jason Singh, Gillian Allnutt, Glacier Poetry
Q: What did you most want to know about these women characters' lives that you were able to explore?
I wanted to clarify Lady Macbeth in ways that resonate with the experiences of many women today, addressing themes of loss and motherhood.
Boo Hewerdine, Fiona Benson, Alison Binney, Yvonne Lyon, Eartoon
Q: Did that get reinforced by your research because you went to some fantastic archives like the Palace Green Library at Durham Cathedral?
Yes, I found that many historical documents reveal the isolation and persecution of women and help illuminate the themes of my poems.
Boo Hewerdine, Fiona Benson, Alison Binney, Yvonne Lyon, Eartoon
Q: Is that something to do with the list form, Alison, do you think?
Yes, when I wrote this, it was about six years into my dad's diagnosis of dementia, and writing about objects was a way of expressing my emotions indirectly.
Rebecca Watts, Brian Bilston, Cristina Rivera Garza, Deryn Rees-Jones
Q: Deryn, are there a couple of collections you could maybe point to as demonstrating the range of powers, I guess is the word, that a poetry collection can exercise?
Deryn suggests several collections, such as "Adam" by Jaeger-Odubanju and "The Strongbox" by Sacha Dogdale, which utilize unique organizing principles to invite varied reading experiences.
Rebecca Watts, Brian Bilston, Cristina Rivera Garza, Deryn Rees-Jones
Q: Cristina, you've written collections of poems. So what's your organizing principle when you're putting a collection together?
Cristina mentions that it varies by project, but she tries to remain faithful to her materials and lets them guide her in order to create a cohesive collection.
