  • Interplay & intertextuality!

I have loved every single episode and am awed by the subtle nuanced understanding of each and every subject‘s craft (Edwina and John know their stuff!) I most enjoy the interplay, artists referencing artists, who reference artists, who… I enjoy that the podcast leads to asking myself “what are my key cultural moments?”

And I have been challenged and pushed and grown by stories of parents.

John Wilson is a brilliant interviewer. I particularly love that so many of his subjects are older, and having led such full lives in their art, their stories are so rich, varied and inspiring.

Theaster Gates
Q: What is your perspective on education and being bussed to a predominantly white school?
It was a privilege that provided opportunities but left me with mixed feelings about the implications and the resources available to my local community.
Theaster Gates
Q: What were your parents' influences on your work?
My parents instilled in me a strong work ethic, with my father emphasizing hard work and my mother encouraging a moral and spiritual groundwork.

Q: How important is the city of Chicago to your work?
Chicago is very important. It was an affordable, gritty, rough place where there was so much dynamism and so much affordability that I could grow and bloom.
Theaster Gates
Q: How would you describe what you do?
I probably wouldn't even call myself a social artist. I would say artists have baked into our DNA, awareness and sensitivity of the things happening around us.
David Hare
Q: Are you still driven by a sense of injustice, do you think?
Hare affirmed that he is still driven by a sense of injustice, finding it crucial to address deeper themes of disturbance rather than just obvious wrongs in his plays.
