  • Sylvia Plath episode

On Sylvia Plath, your guest said that feminism hasn’t quite covered the postpartum body or something of that nature. Well, she’s not read enough. There’s a vast field of research of all aspects of pregnancy, maternity, the body, and so on. Too easily generalised. Too easily checked haha.

  • Well done Matthew!

I have just read some of the reviews by people who clearly don’t know where the off button is and prefer to rant on a review page. Good grief, some people just need to chill…

When I want to chill, I turn to this programme. Matthew is the perfect host with a light touch and interested in finding out more about each subject.

    Well done and thank you!

  • Fantastic except for Matthew

I do love Great Lives but Matthew Parris is very irritating. His opinions should be irrelevant and his droning, patronising tone silenced. Let the guest and experts speak.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Cartoonist Naji al-Ali
Q: Why did Mona Chalabi choose Najee Al Ali as her great life?
She highlights the way Handala embodies bearing witness to injustice and how al-Ali's fearless critique connected his art to the lived realities of Palestinian refugees and Arab societies, making his life a blueprint for political conscience in illustration.
Cleopatra picked by Kate Williams
Q: What myths about Cleopatra are viewed with skepticism by the historians on the show?
The carpet and the asp stories are scrutinized, with the hosts arguing that these narratives have been amplified to fit a sensational, sexualized image, whereas Cleopatra's true impact lay in strategic decisions, political maneuvering, and cultural influence that helped Egypt endure under Rome.
Cleopatra picked by Kate Williams
Q: How does the episode reconcile Shakespearean depictions with archaeological and Egyptian perspectives?
The episode notes that Shakespeare popularized a dramatic, emotion-driven image of Cleopatra, but when weighed against Egyptology and primary sources, her role as a ruler, diplomat, and organizer of grain and state policy emerges as more central than romantic intrigue; the discussion calls for separating myth from the historical record.
Cleopatra picked by Kate Williams
Q: Joyce, what are the main sources for Cleopatra's life?
The main sources are Roman authors writing after Cleopatra's death who, biased by their own political aims, portray Rome and Octavian favorably while Cleopatra and Egypt are depicted less favorably; there are also medieval Arabic accounts and a scarcity of eyewitness testimony, which means much is interpreted through later narratives rather than contemporary records.
William Gladstone, four-time PM
Q: When did Gladstone begin to stand out from the crowd as a leader?
From his early parliamentary career, where he showed financial acumen and a forensic mind for detail, and later through his leadership of the Liberal Party and his reformist stances, with mounting public influence as he navigated internal party shifts and evolving policy positions.
