  • Julia Wong involuntary treatment episode

This episode was quite well done and did address the fact that there is scant evidence for involuntary treatment. However, I was really disappointed that the language of the “Opioid crisis” continues to be used by the CBC. People are dying from a toxic unregulated drug supply as drug policy experts continually emphasize. Can we please get the terminology correct? It matters for how the issue is understood and addressed. I would expect CBC to have this nuance, especially when Edmonton is home to ... more

  • More progressive spin from the CBC.

Given that there are so few podcast based on local events and news in the city of Edmonton, I was really hoping that the CBC would put this together to talk a truely Edmonton perspective. I was hoping for a balanced nutral perspective from all sides. However, this is just another left leaning progressive outlet with a narrative to spout. The CBC should explore the need for balanced content as a main stream news outlet. There are already too many versions of this podcast.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

What is a restrictive covenant and why do some Edmonton neighbourhoods want them?
Q: What are the risks or downsides of these covenants for neighborhoods and city planning?
They can be too rigid, potentially freezing neighborhoods and complicating future development or densification, and they may shift the balance of power away from city planning toward private agreements, which could undermine city-wide goals if adoption is uneven.
What is a restrictive covenant and why do some Edmonton neighbourhoods want them?
Q: Okay. And so let's get into maybe some of the mechanics. How do these ancient covenants actually work?
A group of residents collaborates with a lawyer to draft a written agreement that outlines rules for properties in the covenant, then registers it at the Alberta Land Titles Office; once signed, the covenant binds current and future owners on the affected lots and is enforced by the group, not the city, with effectiveness depending on how many neighbors participate.
So, we need to talk about Alberta separatism
Q: So first, I do kind of want to get nerdy. Can you tell me a bit about how you go gathering this data?
We use CBC's long-running public opinion methodology, starting with a random, representative list of Albertans, calling real people to collect data, and applying consistent polling practices to track separation questions along with broader political attitudes over time.
Finding out when and why Edmonton police use Tasers isn’t as easy as you’d think
Q: What are the main takeaways about transparency and policy from EPS's responses?
EPS argues that taser use follows de-escalation principles and current laws, but the reporting gaps and redactions in location data highlight a need for more accessible, timely, and comprehensive information for public oversight.
Finding out when and why Edmonton police use Tasers isn’t as easy as you’d think
Q: Why were the control-tactics reports chosen over device logs, and what do those reports reveal?
Control-tactics reports provide incident-level data when force is used, offering a broader but less detailed view than device logs; they reveal risk factors and demographics, showing patterns like mental-health distress being a common trigger for force.
