You can see here that Hugo originally had a different epitaph, which he crossed out. It reads:

After a dive through Dumas' Three Musketeers, I felt an inkling to read Les Misérables, a novel as a Lutheran Pastor I have wanted to read for some time but have been intimidated by the sheer size of it. Sometimes an episode would confirm my reading of a particular section. Which delighted me. Sometimes an episode helped illuminate a tough section that I only half understood, or less.
