Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Trying to change the systemic challenge of athlete safeguarding on a global scale: Kirsty Burrows
Q: Having identified and recognized this problem, this systemic problem, how did you go about changing it? So what steps have you taken to leave the clinic room and move into what you're doing now?
After completing a FIFA/CIES master's program, Burrows joined the International Olympic Committee and took on safeguarding work. She developed the first framework for the Rio Games and guidance and tools for sports organizations, then helped expand prevention efforts and regional support following increased attention to abuse in sport.
Trying to change the systemic challenge of athlete safeguarding on a global scale: Kirsty Burrows
Q: What have you witnessed across different cultures? Obviously, we've got a good example of Norway leading the way. What have you witnessed across, I mean, such a work in Singapore, Italy? How did it vary there culturally?
Burrows explains that athlete welfare challenges appear across sports and cultures. Her work focuses on systems change, especially preventing violence and supporting mental health, and she describes how athletes often confided in physiotherapists but lacked clear reporting and support pathways.
Emily Kinkaid: "Going through the unthinkable challenged everything I thought I knew about running a practice"
Q: What practical steps did you take to ensure the business wouldn't crumble when you stepped away?
We introduced leadership development, delegated authority with boundaries, and built a leadership philosophy (intent-based leadership) so decisions could be made by others and the business could run in my absence.
Emily Kinkaid: "Going through the unthinkable challenged everything I thought I knew about running a practice"
Q: How did you grow Active Step from a single room to a multi-clinic operation?
I initially expanded due to needing to delegate during maternity leave, then I used coaching and leadership development to empower staff, created systems, and invested in a larger, purpose-built clinic as the team grew.
Emily Kinkaid: "Going through the unthinkable challenged everything I thought I knew about running a practice"
Q: What was the moment you decided to start your own private practice?
I wanted more freedom of time and control over my earning potential, and after several roles in sales, I felt ownership and independence were essential to reach my financial and personal goals.
