Well done on 100 episodes! After listening to the latest one I went back and listened to episode 1 just to see how well you have progressed. My one observation is that I am disappointed that you no longer refer to Carl as “Wild West Widger”! Keep going, you are a badly needed honest voice in this thing of ours and whilst I may not always agree with what’s said, I love that you say it as it is. I’ve been in the industry for 38 years now and wish this podcast had been around in my formative years.... more

  • A Must-Listen For New and Experienced Financial Advisers

There have been times over the last few years when I’ve felt isolated within my previous firm and questioned whether I’d chosen the right profession. Listening to TRAP every fortnight and speaking with my fellow Singapore Trapists has given me the confidence and motivation to keep delivering real financial planning in a market dominated by private banks and product salespeople.

The show doesn’t just guide those delivering (or wanting to deliver) real financial planning; it’s also genuinely laug... more

  • Did someone say 6 out of 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

As a financial planner, I should probably keep this professional, but The TRAP Podcast makes that difficult. It’s one of the rare financial podcasts that’s both educational and genuinely funny.

You guys do a fantastic job promoting the real drivers of financial success: patience, discipline, and not doing anything daft when markets get exciting – well done!

A must-listen for anyone who wants better financial outcomes—and a few laughs along the way. Keep up the good work lads!

  • Thank you ❤️

I was introduced to your podcast just under 3 months ago. Today I have officially listened to every single episode (that’s more than 1 episode a day on average).

As a newly qualified IFA this has given me a massive boost in growing my client bank and giving the few clients I’ve got the best experience.

I was fortunate enough to get one of the scholarship tickets for TRAP live. It was amazing meeting you four, along with other like minded people.

I’ve still got so much more to learn, but this... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

99 - COLIN LAWSON: Maintaining Equilibrium When Scaling
Q: How does Equilibrium approach scaling while maintaining client service quality?
He outlines a 100-person team with a four-to-one power-planner ratio, a strong emphasis on staff retention, and a culture built around clear values, mission, and ongoing alignment across the organization to keep delivering better outcomes for clients.
93 - MADISON McCALL: At The Vanguard of Full Fat Financial Planning
Q: What changes has Vanguard made recently to Life Strategy, and what innovations do you see coming?
We lowered fees across Life Strategy from 22 to 20 basis points, adjusted the UK tilt, and introduced Life Strategy Global, which removes the UK bias for a fully global portfolio. We're also focusing on blended solutions that mix indexed and selective active components, supported by a broad Advisor Alpha research platform.
94 - MATT ABOUZEID - Institutional to Individual: Asset Management to Full Fat FP
Q: What are you doing to attract clients and where are you getting them from?
Matt explains they are six months in with a healthy client base largely through introductions and a focus on targeting business owners, emphasizing authenticity and personal connection over traditional marketing; growth relies on consistent service and leveraging a strong network.
92 - Star Fund Managers: Fairytales or Superheroes?
Q: What is the panel's stance on active fund management vs. indexing?
They argue that active management generally underperforms over time, advocate for diversified indexing or systematic approaches, and emphasize client education and planning rather than chasing star managers.
90 - BRETT DAVIDSON: The Financial Planning Wizard of Aus
Q: What do advisors keep getting wrong?
Davidson pointed out the misalignment of incentives and failure to separate servicing and new business advisory roles as significant mistakes.
