Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 69 | We Were the "Good Polygamists” | Emily Lee
Q: Are you rooting for him to die or?
I wouldn't say I'm rooting for his death; I've grieved him as a father and I don't wish harm, but I don't think I'll be devastated if he dies, and I'm not planning to attend the funeral.
Episode 68 | How Mormon Purity Culture Kept Her a Virgin Until Her 30s | Madison Sparkles
Q: Hey, I have a question. Could you explain growing up in Mormon culture regarding temple practices and the expectations around dating and purity?
The guest discusses the strict rules around dating, modesty, and chastity; the emphasis on obedience to prophets, the role of bishops and temple recommend interviews, and the internalized belief that following these rules equates to righteousness, along with how those rules shaped daily choices and self-perception.
Episode 68 | How Mormon Purity Culture Kept Her a Virgin Until Her 30s | Madison Sparkles
Q: Can you tell us the story about going on a Mormon mission and how that went down?
She describes growing up tall in a tall Mormon family, the process of preparing for a mission, the MTC experience, and being called to Taejon, Korea, including her fears, the long training, and the emotional complexity of leaving unexpectedly due to illness, which forced an honorable release instead of completing the mission.
Episode 60 | I Grew Up With 3 Moms and 21 Kids: Addi McCall
Q: What was it like growing up in the AUB and how did family life function on a daily basis?
Addie describes a large, interconnected household with multiple wives and many children, routine church activities, and a culture that prioritized obedience, modesty, and polygamous family dynamics, while highlighting both the closeness and strain of those relationships.
Episode 48: Confronting A Mormon: Olivia Olsen
Q: As a friend, what kind of advice would you give to me to get more Mormon friends that are like you and not like some of the other ones I've met?
Olivia suggests focusing on genuine, respectful relationships with people who think differently, rather than trying to convert or manipulate, and emphasizes openness and understanding in friendships.
