  • It’s the business!

We’re lucky to have someone as knowledgeable and experienced as Jeff and his team, making a podcast that’s laser focussed on an industry that I love. Great conversations between interesting and well respected guests, with lots of emphasis on the business of CI - which is unusual but hugely welcome. And all beautifully produced to boot! Well done Jeff :-)

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Beyond The Bid: Re-thinking The Role Of The AV Integrator On Luxury Schemes
Q: How should distributors' involvement be managed?
Careful delineation of responsibilities is required; while distributors can accelerate designs, the final design and liability should remain with the integrator or consultant, to manage professional indemnity and ensure client needs are met.
Beyond The Bid: Re-thinking The Role Of The AV Integrator On Luxury Schemes
Q: What is the advantage of having consultants produce a full bill of materials and design?
It accelerates tendering and provides a clear, neutral specification that helps avoid misinterpretation and helps the integrator bid accurately, improving win rate and reducing rework.
Beyond The Bid: Re-thinking The Role Of The AV Integrator On Luxury Schemes
Q: Why is early involvement of technology integrators often challenging in luxury projects?
Historically seen as contractors rather than designers, with reluctance from clients and design teams; this is changing as awareness grows that integrators can shape the project early and prevent costly late-stage changes.
Beyond Control: Understanding Lighting Design With Vanessa Macedo, Dan Griffiths, Daniel Hughes and James Ratcliffe
Q: What CAD and documentation skills are important for lighting design in these projects?
James notes CAD is essential for documenting where drivers will live and how cables run, and stresses keeping documentation concise to avoid overwhelming electricians; good documentation helps ensure proper installation and future servicing.
Beyond Control: Understanding Lighting Design With Vanessa Macedo, Dan Griffiths, Daniel Hughes and James Ratcliffe
Q: What typically drives lighting design decisions in high-end residential projects?
James explains that architectural features and a well-planned lighting scheme across multiple circuits add value, whereas a grid of downlights with no integrated design tends to be a poor approach; collaboration with a lighting designer and integrator helps define both aesthetics and control.
