Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

S8:E25 Leigh Lucas with Julia Chiapella
Q: Let's set up the book a little: what is Splashed Things about and how does it structure its narrative?
Splashed Things is a book-length narrative poem about losing my former boyfriend to suicide, tracing a decade of grief, healing with a therapist, and finding a life alongside ongoing sorrow. It's designed as one continuous piece rather than discrete titled poems, with a focus on letting language and form carry the narrative and emotion.
S8: E21 Grayson Thompson Chats with Julie Murphy
Q: How do you think about writing, and what the hope for writing is in this time of erasure?
He suggests that the great hope of writing is to remind readers that others feel this too, with community and shared truths as ongoing goals; sometimes simply reaching at least one other person with a shared feeling is enough to sustain writing.
S8: E21 Grayson Thompson Chats with Julie Murphy
Q: So maybe we could start to hear one.
Grayson reads a poem (Juniper Poplar) and discusses how its imagery blends movement, scale, and memory; he also notes how the shift from external pressures to internal experiences shapes his work.
S7 E35: Pt 2-Maxine Chernoff & Paul Hoover talk with Roxi Power
Q: Paul, you chose a labyrinthine poem, The Windows, Speech Lit Islands. Could you set it up for listeners and explain what you were aiming to achieve with its structure?
The poem uses a camera-like gaze to move from interior to exterior, creating a system where light, language, and place are inseparable, and where the islands are both literal windows and words that allow readers to see relationships and meanings in new ways.
S7.E22.Francisco Aragón Speaks with Julia Chiapella
Q: Could you talk about the manuscript collection acquired by Arizona State University and how that relates to your poem January 21st, 2013?
Aragón explains that ASU's acquisition of Rubén Darío manuscripts and the subsequent debate around their authenticity provided a foundation for the epistolary piece, which uses Darío's imagined voice to respond to Sergio Ramírez, highlighting how scholarly debates shape literary reception.
