  • Wonderful insights

This is an excellent show with a conversation format about poetry, and what drives poets to the page. I highly recommend it if you enjoy, listening to poems and listening to poets, talk intelligently about poetry.

ep. 335 - David Mason
Q: David, what can you tell us about how this book can be put together and how you knew there was enough cohesion for a full collection?
I felt multiple threads came together around themes of war, justice, and mercy, drawing on experiences from Tasmania, Greece, and the American West, and integrating sections that stem from an unfinished Escalus drama and from a practice I've been learning with Aboriginal communities. The goal was to weave these strands into a book that feels unified through shared imagery—fire, ice, and endurance—while allowing different geographic and cultural perspectives to sit alongside one another.
ep. 331 - Alexandra Oliver
Q: How did your journey begin in poetry?
I grew up in a family with a love for poems and recitation in schools, which paved my way into poetry.
ep. 332 - Jason B. Crawford
Q: How do you feel about balancing accessibility with complexity in your poetry?
The only person I really cared to understand it was my people. I wanted for any black person to pick the book up and say, "Oh, I feel seen."
ep. 332 - Jason B. Crawford
Q: Jason, how did you come up with the overarching conceit of the book?
Partly, it was, I wanted to do something completely different from my first collection. And I was in my MFA, so I wrote this entire book within my MFA.
ep. 327 - Liz Robbins
Q: Did your positions or feelings about it change and evolve as you were working on the research for this project?
Yes, initially I leaned toward a sex-positive feminist perspective but my views shifted after researching the negative impacts of sex work.
