  • The Poetry Space is tops

The Poetry Space is a gem! Katie and Tim do a wonderful job making the world of poetry accessible and enjoyable. What an incredible mix of knowledge and curiosity and honesty and joy. I look forward to each new episode to learn about all things poetry. Their guests and contributors are always thoughtful and engaging. They’ve inspired me to try new things in my writing. Some of my recent favorites: the Chapbook episode was very sweet with them trading haibun reading and Rhina Espaillat’s ep... more

  • Lit Mag Duals

I really enjoyed the two lit mag dual episodes. I read and write a lot of poetry, I’m not well known and have been pubbed in one lit mag in Canada. I stopped submitting for the most part for the exact reasons discussed or proven in these two episodes. I really don’t understand how some poetry gets published as well as some books get printed. I’ve been writing feverishly for 6 years now and find it hard to figure out who or whether it’s even worth the effort. These two podcasts have assured me ... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

ep. 132 - Frank Turner on Songwriting
Q: What makes a great opening line in a song or poem, in your view?
A great opening line should grab attention immediately and steer the listener into the space you are creating, which is why first lines matter so much and why some artists are brilliant at starting with a bold, surprising image or statement.
ep. 132 - Frank Turner on Songwriting
Q: How do you view the relationship between poetry and songwriting in your own work?
There is clear water between the disciplines; they share roots but operate with different tools—sound, rhythm, and structure for songs, and line-by-line precision and imagery for poetry—yet both rely on craft and intent.
ep. 130 - Negative Space Part 1
Q: Is there a point at which a poem relies so much on pattern that you don't think it is a poem, given your background as a mathematician and bilingual thinker?
Pedro suggests there isn't a single boundary; poetry can transform over time and even highly patterned work may reveal poetry's essence later, indicating that definitions are flexible and evolve with practice.
ep. 120 - How to Start a Lit Mag
Q: What kind of financial model am I going to set up, and how am I going to quote unquote pay the bills?
Anna explains that most poetry presses do not make money and her goal was to cover operational costs without incurring a loss.
ep. 120 - How to Start a Lit Mag
Q: Was there a specific moment when you were like, that's it, I'm starting my own literary magazine?
Anna mentions she impulsively decided to start a poetry press during winter break and sought to combine her love for poetry and art.
