  • Too slow

I am frustrated by pretty much every episode I try to listen to. The pacing is too slow, and Smith’s voice is unanimated. I like the poems of his I’ve read, and he gets great guests, but listening is too much suffering.

  • Lovely Podcast

My new favorite podcast on poetry. I even splurged on the secret show now. Fair and intelligent look at formal poetry. Includes both discussions and poem readings. Best episode so far is the one with Joshua Mehigan. Would love to hear more interviews with Gertrude Schnackenberg, A. E. Stallings, Adam Kirsch, William Logan, Geoffrey Brock or David Saint John.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep 240: AMA #3, Pt. 1
Q: What does your process look like for keeping track of your poems, and how do you manage drafts and versions?
Responses varied from detailed digital workflows (Scrivener master documents, Trello boards, and year-at-a-glance folders) to more tactile systems (organized physical drafts and even Braille-enabled devices). The consensus was that most poets maintain multiple drafts, frequently copy-paste and rename versions, and struggle with version control, prioritizing the ability to retrieve older iterations while refining current work.
Ep 203: Gateway Drugs, ft. Mark Leidner, Pt. 1
Q: What makes Morrison's Nobel speech sit differently from a traditional lecture?
It begins with a familiar storytelling frame, then fractures into a complex web of contradictions and moral commitments that force listeners to negotiate meaning rather than accept a single message.
Ep 199: Only Bad Poems, ft. moonandmouth
Q: What is the core argument of Only Bad Poems Go Viral, and how does it differ from common takes on viral poetry?
Stephanie outlines a nuanced view that virality often comes from a mix of mundane life and weighty emotion, plus reader dynamics, rather than simply the poem's technical prowess, and she discusses how readers react both positively and negatively.
Ep 199: Only Bad Poems, ft. moonandmouth
Q: Tell me about how you got into podcasting and what drew you to discuss virality in poetry.
The host shares his long-standing interest in poetry and online poetry communities, and the guest explains her pathway through the internet culture and Substack, as well as how virality on social media intersects with craft and publication.
Ep 205: Ascending Orders of Meaninglessness
Q: How do you see AI changing the skills we teach and the tasks students should be able to do?
The speakers acknowledge a shift toward AI-assisted tasks that can outpace human effort, raising doubts about which analytical skills remain uniquely valuable and how education should adapt.
