  • Incredibly rich and deep

Absolutely gorgeous guests, thoughtful preparation and profound conversations. My only request would be for the host to speak about 40% less to let the guests take up more time. While David’s questions are often so rich and steeped in care, sometimes they tend to center him and his thinking instead of the guest. I still found both episodes I listened to deeply moving and transcendent but I did find myself craving more of the guest’s voice. Thank you though that this exists what a gift!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Diana Arterian : Agrippina the Younger & Smoke Drifts
Q: What advice would Agrippina the Younger have for us, for you and me, for the Dianas and non-Dianas?
I feel like she would just be like, 'What the fuck are you doing?' in terms of people who lean into misogynist tropes instead of engaging with genuine feminist action.
Diana Arterian : Agrippina the Younger & Smoke Drifts
Q: Could you talk about the act and activism of study in your book, and the experience of what it means for a poet to engage with history as a kind of study?
I needed to read a whole lot because I'm not a historian. I don't really know anything about ancient Roman history, and what I do know is kind of within this 100 year period, if anything. It felt empowering to push back the impulse to not continue to imagine and recognize that I didn't have to.
Olga Ravn : The Wax Child
Q: How would you compare these different mystical arts from that time? And why do you think one kind of magical practice was persecuted, while the other was celebrated by the king and the nobility?
Alchemy, associated with the nobility and individual achievement, was celebrated as a scientific venture, whereas folk magic was part of the domestic life of common people and was criminalized as it threatened the power dynamics. Alchemy represents control over nature, while folk magic signifies collective, community-driven practices without the desire for personal accolades.
Olga Ravn : The Wax Child
Q: How did you alchemize and transform all that research into something so opposite of a research historical novel, something that's much closer to a dream vision kind of poem?
I realized there's a huge difference between learning and experiencing. While researching, I found that experiencing material, such as engaging with folk magic, becomes necessary. Researching for the pleasure of the research allowed me to move away from the weight of knowledge, leading to a more imaginative narrative.
Rickey Laurentiis : Death of the First Idea
Q: What philosophy or psychology are you pushing back against with the title 'Death of the First Idea'?
The first idea was the first idea I had of myself. Death of the first idea was a reference to a kind of a revisionary practice that would allow me wings to fly into the new person that I've become.
