  • Content: 5/5. Sound quality: 0/1.

Buy a professional microphone and some noise deadening stuff for your echoey room, please! Often the guest’s audio is far superior to the interviewer. Otherwise — fantastic podcast. Just hard to listen to. Often will begin episodes then end them after a moment because the are so hard to listen to.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Drinks With The Deal: Sheppard's Zablocki on How She Came to Healthcare Law
Q: Tell us about yourself and your background and how you found your way to the law.
Amanda describes growing up in New York, being inspired by her father's general practice, and her early realization that law was her calling, which led her to private practice and then a shift into health care through a personal family health crisis that steered her toward health care and nonprofit missions.
Activist Investing Today: Goodwin's Wood Talks REITs, Biotech Activism
Q: What are the main activist strategies in biotech, especially when there is no immediate exit opportunity?
Activists push for cost discipline, pipeline prioritization, and strategic alternatives like partnerships, asset sales, or even liquidation. They monitor milestones and data readouts to time pressure on management and may advocate for exits or strategic reallocation when funding becomes constrained.
Activist Investing Today: Goodwin's Wood Talks REITs, Biotech Activism
Q: So Leonard, do you feel like REITs are good targets due to specific structural features and governance issues?
Yes. Underperforming REITs with discount-to-NAV characteristics, leverage concerns, external management structures, and governance gaps—especially around independence and board composition—tend to draw activist attention, and governance-focused campaigns often intersect with capital strategy.
Drinks With The Deal: Skadden's Freed on Apollo-Athene, Family Business
Q: Talk about your time as an associate at Skadden and how you navigated the post-dot-com downturn while shaping your broad M&A skill set.
He reflects on mentorship, the shift from a booming late 1990s market to the early 2000s downturn, and how doing restructuring work alongside traditional M&A provided a deeper, multi-disciplinary view of deal-making and risk management.
Drinks With The Deal: Skadden's Freed on Apollo-Athene, Family Business
Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background.
Todd discusses growing up in a small Ohio town in a family-run dealership, starting in the service and sales areas, learning customer service, grit, and midwestern work ethic, and then transitioning to law school and a focus on M&A to build a career in New York.
