  • Too long to get to the story

I just listened to the episode about Howard’s “The Phoenix on the Sword,” and it’s over 27 minutes before you get to the subject of the podcast. The overlong opening banter made me want to cleave some skulls.

    Also, it’s CO-nuhn, not Co-NAN

The second syllable in the Cimmerian’s name is unstressed and pronounced like the second syllable of Ronin or of Saoirse Ronan’s surname. In the Milius film, Subotai consistently pronounces it correctly. It is, of course, a real Irish name, as in Arthur Cona... more

  • Just the right balance

I’ve been interested in fantastic literature (and gaming) for as long as I can remember. These hosts make the topic approachable and accessible and give it an erudite touch as well, both with their own original thinking and their top-notch guest lineup. It’s a tough balance to hit, but they’ve done it.

  • One of the most consistently entertaining podcasts!

Not only is this a massively informative and stimulating discussion of all things Howardian and weird in general but the actual play aspect is one of the best there is. I listen to a lot of AP podcasts and Bourbon and Barbarians is perhaps my favourite. It’s the kind of group I’d love to play with. Keep on delivering, guys, and I’ll keep listening.

  • Crom Cares Not! Fight Fool! Fight!

I have loved Robert E. Howard, Conan and barbarians my whole life. All the pulp adventure stuff is great! These guys have Cimmerian blood in their veins!

"Crom cares not! Chart your own path of blood, sword, wenches and victory! Now be off with your politically correct drivel before I cleave your skull!"

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Season 22 Episode 2: The Isle of the Torturers
Q: Josh, did you find any sort of connections between this ring and the Bloodstone?
There's a difference: the character in the Clark Ashton Smith story is just one hero and it ends. Whereas Kane, it's just one more tool in his kit, if that makes sense.
Season 22 Episode 2: The Isle of the Torturers
Q: What do you think of the way the torturers were described, as we were introduced to them?
They are the most accommodating of countrymen. They'd say, we will bring you in. That's what they say to at least Fulba, right? We'll make you comfortable. We've got such delights to show you.
Season 20 Episode 3: Elric of Melniboné, Part 3
Q: What do you think of your first jaunt into Elric?
Jonathan finds Elric to be a well-rounded character and is intrigued about ongoing narratives, noting a surprise at Elric's depth beyond preconceived expectations.
Season 20 Episode 1: Elric of Melniboné, Part 1
Q: How did you like the way Moorcock writes combat like these battle scenes?
I think it's cool that in this sword and sorcery character and novel series that everybody appreciates that like the very first instance of combat is like a ship to ship battle that plays out.
