The Character's Toolkit

Marisa Gelfand

In every episode, therapist (and reader!) Marisa Gelfand chats with novelists and therapists to explore the mental health struggles of fictional characters. Think, bibliotherapy: mental health with a literary twist. Characters in books and literature don't have access to a therapist's insights, but you do, and you walk away with the skills.

  • If you love books, you will love this podcast!

The Character’s Toolkit podcast is so unique. It’s like going to a bookclub led by your most perceptive, insightful friend, with the added bonus of listening to author talk about their book. Marisa leads the discussion of the characters with the authors who created them in a way that brings it all together. I think the authors even end up learning something new about their own characters! The book discussed in the first episode is about skiing and competitive athletes, neither of which are top... more

  • Like sitting in on your dream book club!

Sometimes you have those thoughts about the people who would comprise a really fantastic dinner party … well, this podcast is my idea of the most interesting book club! Such a wonderful way to experience these characters and their stories! And (at the risk of oversharing) I’ve often thought how great it might be to have therapy while walking or over coffee - and here it is in a podcast!
