  • Thoughtful and notable for its specificity

Deepa’s work for justice is compassionate, thoughtful, and built in relationships in a way that clearly comes across in this podcast. The relevance and specificity of each episode feels particularly poignant in an era where there are a multiplicity of tactics being employed across movements. Listeners might not agree or identify completely with every perspective a guest brings to the table, but can frequently understand the reasons behind the lane they choose for themselves in working to build a... more

  • Hugely disappointing

I wonder how Deepa could actually create space for activists and people who don’t come from the immense amount of privilege as her, without taking up so much of it? This podcast is an attempt at something many podcasters have done much better, without her platform. It’s time to make space. She also very much upholds the non-profit industrial complex and simple activism that wouldn’t require self-reflection on her own part, by who she has on her show.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Solidarity, Justice, and Interfaith Organizing
Q: In these turbulent times, how do you organize without falling into despair or resorting to toxic positivity, and how do you maintain a long-term vision?
She argues that hope arises from real, collective work at the bottom of society—mourning what is hard while actively building practical, transformational paths forward. Organizing is framed as a sustained discipline that reshapes people and societies together, not as a shortcut to safety or easy outcomes.
Solidarity, Justice, and Interfaith Organizing
Q: How do you see solidarity showing up across lines of race, class, gender, and faith, and how do you navigate those differences?
The guest describes solidarity as a practice rather than a theory—built through building durable, imperfect relationships, creating ecosystems of care, and staying rooted in shared struggles while honoring differences. She emphasizes transformation through relationships, humility, and leadership that centers the communities most affected by injustice.
Solidarity: Navigating Internal Movement Tensions and Conflict
Q: How do we approach conflict that arises not because of differences of shared values, but rather disagreement on the best approach, slash specific policy solutions?
We have to move away from this belief that we have to have a singular strategy. We all have to throw in in all the ways. If we can have a collective vision and agree on the fundamentals, then having multiple strategies to address the problem is essential.
Solidarity As Public Memory
Q: Can you tell us why this process of both individual and community healing was vital for you, and how that's been processing since you wrote the book?
Dr. Satsuki Ina discusses the importance of uncovering historical narratives and sharing personal experiences to achieve healing, emphasizing the silence and trauma that has persisted over generations.
Solidarity Across Division
Q: How has the concept or practice of solidarity evolved within your network over the years?
The practice of solidarity has deepened among Arab Americans, especially in response to external challenges, fostering closer collaboration with other marginalized communities.
