  • Always import. Always interesting

Jewish Currents is without a doubt the central nexus of the most important conversations happening in the American Jewish left. Their podcast is no exception. I love every episode but here are my favorites: The “Sephardic/Mizrahi Therapy” episode was genuinely life changing. And the episode of the secular anti-religious old guard passive aggressively complaining about the mag releasing divrei torah as funny as a Curb episode and oddly heartwarming. Keep it up and free p@1est!n3

  • The only podcast I listen to religiously

You don’t need to be a religious Jew to make listening to this your practice. Episodes are always insightful and well-curated, with Arielle acting as a steady guide. I will be happy when they finally decide to change the image, but that’s my only gripe!

  • Excellent coverage of a wide range of subjects that are important to me

I started listening for podcasts about Jewish subjects that only On the Nose covered but before long I found that Jewish Currents is the most reliable and accessible news source available to me for in-depth responses to the news in general

  • Informative and Thought Provoking

Appreciate the ideas and discussions that are brought up each episode. Even if I initially disagree with a point, they will explain so I understand it more and will question my initial perspective. I love how they just really dive into the complexity of current issues and have voices from various backgrounds speaking.

  • Life preserver for Jews working in Jewish orgs

This is a wonderful and essential podcast! I am always excited for the new pod to drop because it’s almost always about something I’m thinking about! Especially grateful for Arielle’s recent commentary on the terrible Candace O./Norman F. conversation. I searched for good commentary about it because it was such a train wreck, but the only thoughtful response (and almost only response at all) was On the Nose. Thank you!!!!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Hill
Q: What is the alternative vision of justice that you are reaching for in the book, and also that you would have wanted in your own life?
The guest describes identifying as an abolitionist who envisions a society where institutions like prisons are not the default but are replaced by structures that support care, responsibility, and collective well-being, emphasizing that change comes from those affected shaping new systems rather than simply dismantling old ones.
America’s Threat to the World
Q: Is the trajectory of American power inevitable, or could restraint or different domestic coalitions alter this path?
Bali argues that while restraint has existed in various forms historically, the contemporary trajectory appears driven by structural incentives toward coercion and the diminishing influence of liberal consensus. She suggests that meaningful restraint would require forces outside the current US system and a broader domestic coalition aligned with constitutional and multilateral principles.
America’s Threat to the World
Q: So how do we talk about what has changed in the way America relates to other countries under Donald Trump without sanitizing that shift?
Asli Bali explains that the difference is not only in policy choices but in the explicit rejection of multilateral constraints and international law, while acknowledging that some continuity remains in the coercive character of power. The domestic and international engines of power have both shifted toward a more transactional, coercive model, with less emphasis on universally shared norms.
What the Soldiers Did in Gaza
Q: What does it mean for the future of Israeli society?
The prospects for reversing the radicalization and addressing the humanization of Palestinians require deep changes in education, political discourse, and public understanding of the occupation.
What the Soldiers Did in Gaza
Q: What does accountability actually look like?
Accountability involves international investigations, focusing on high-ranking officials responsible for commands rather than foot soldiers, and necessitating a broader understanding of the military's actions and political decisions.
