  • Fascinating, entertaining and thoughtful.

Vaseem and Abir have a delightful form of repartee that I found so enjoyable that after listening to 3 current episodes I had to start the entire run of episodes from the very first. Starting with their books, which are incredible reads and a fantastic addition to any bookshelf, and on into this podcast, I find my knowledge base expanding, my list of must read authors growing at a wild rate, and my thirst for more history only increasing. Episode 185 - What happens to a decomposing body? and other extreme cleaning stories by Ben Giles aka 'the human stain remover'
Q: How did you transition from learning on the job to writing a book about these experiences?
After years in the field, the demand for extreme stories grew, and I started drafting notes about the most memorable jobs, ultimately turning them into a manuscript while reflecting on the emotional toll, which later led to a major publishing deal after a Guardian piece highlighted my work.
Episode 185 - What happens to a decomposing body? and other extreme cleaning stories by Ben Giles aka 'the human stain remover'
Q: What was your first major job like on site and how did you handle it?
The first major job involved a rural West Wales property where a man had decomposed for eight weeks; we faced a room full of fat and contamination, required improvised techniques from basic cleaning to dealing with body fat in concrete, and we learned quickly through trial, error, and the help of a pest control contact, all while navigating safety concerns.
Episode 185 - What happens to a decomposing body? and other extreme cleaning stories by Ben Giles aka 'the human stain remover'
Q: What sparked your interest in extreme cleaning and turning it into a career?
I started window cleaning to fit my surfing lifestyle, then saw a chance to move into niche, more lucrative work when a client asked for cleaning a vacant property with years of neglect; that led to the realization there was a real market for specialized cleaning and crime-scene remediation, which I pursued with grit and a willingness to learn awkward, hands-on skills.
Episode 180 - Anthony Horowitz, A Deadly Episode, and Asterix v Tintin
Q: Who is going to play you when they actually make the film of this Hawthorne story?
Horowitz humorously notes that George Clooney isn't available, but his wife Jill Green is actively developing the project, keeping hopes alive for real casting in the future.
Episode 180 - Anthony Horowitz, A Deadly Episode, and Asterix v Tintin
Q: Give us the elevator pitch for your latest book, the one we're plugging into.
The Hawthorne series centers on a private detective who hires a writer (Horowitz himself) to chronicle his cases; in the latest installment, they solve murders on a film set, with the metafictional twist of the writer inside the story.
