  • More Sean and Short Varied Segments Needed

I love Sean Bean’s simple, down-to-earth approach to appreciating birds, but the guest in Ep.7 droned on in a way that made it more about himself than the topic at hand. Ep. 1 was fantastic, and I hope Sean makes more like that. Unpretentious, not precious.

It’s been lovely catching up with all the episodes. Tempted to start with the Sean Bean series, I started with s1 and e1. I’m so glad I did. Wonderful presenters and guests. Totally my wheelhouse and learning more about my passion. Thank you.

  • Smashing

This is a smashing podcast. I stumbled across it, having, earlier that day mentioned to husband that I’d like to go birding. I’m glad it’s growing again in popularity. The podcast itself is gentle, informative and educational. Very good!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Dawn Chorus with Will Young
Q: Why do some birds sing beautifully while others just make a racket?
Birds sing in different contexts—territorial defense, mate attraction, or signaling presence—so the beauty is often in the function and perspective of the listener; various species use a range of calls and songs adapted to their environment, and imitational and regional diversity adds to the perceived beauty.
Puffing Chests & Building Nests
Q: I've seen two pigeons doing a weird dance on my balcony; is it too early for them to nest, and what are your thoughts on pigeons?
Pigeons show social and mating behaviors like bowing and puffing up chests as part of courtship, and nesting can occur more than once per year in favorable conditions. They're highly adaptable, and their nesting timing can be flexible with food supply and weather; so observation in early spring is common, but it may still be early for a full brood depending on conditions.
The Wild Patch with Jo Whiley & Zoe Ball
Q: Is there anything you should do to help them over winter against the cold?
Provide food and ensure water is not frozen over.
