  • Some good content, but frustration too

    I’ll start with the negative:

Some content uploaded that doesn’t present well as a podcast.

For example ‘The Beauty of Islam’ is a lecture that makes extensive use of slides, and is almost completely unintelligible without them. I don’t see the rationale.

On the other hand, there is some good material on here too.

  • Bath pod

This podcast series is fantastic. A great range of lectures. The best so far is the rod Thomas lecture on bathampton down. The only flaw with the podcasts is the sound on a fair few is not great, apart from tat. Total awesomness keep it up

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Rebecca Florisson: Living precariously: The challenge of insecure work (Institute for Policy Research)
Q: What can the Employment Rights Act do to address these issues, and what are its limits?
The Act is a significant reform with potential to reduce severely insecure work, especially through measures like unfair dismissal protections and guaranteed hours, but real impact depends on regulations, enforcement, and addressing multi-factor insecurity beyond contracts.
Rebecca Florisson: Living precariously: The challenge of insecure work (Institute for Policy Research)
Q: Are there differences between insecure and precarious work, and why use one term over the other?
Precarity and insecurity are used somewhat interchangeably, but the chosen term here emphasizes objective measures of insecurity rather than just subjective feelings, focusing on concrete indicators.
Rebecca Florisson: Living precariously: The challenge of insecure work (Institute for Policy Research)
Q: What do we mean when we talk about insecure work?
Insecure work is multi-dimensional, including contractual insecurity, financial insecurity, and lack of access to basic rights and protections; many people experience more than one form at once, creating severe insecurity.
Andrew Wallis: Tackling modern slavery (Institute for Policy Research)
Q: How effective has the Modern Slavery Act been?
Its effectiveness varies; it's improved general awareness but has not significantly increased prosecutions or victim support, and legislation enforcement remains weak.
Placements Abroad
Q: What would your top tip for students considering going abroad for their placement be?
Definitely research the university, the role, and the costs associated, as well as communicating with previous students for insights.
