Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Paraskevas Filippidis - Learning to Be a Good Mentor
Q: What guidance would you offer a postdoc facing a challenge in their mentoring relationship?
Step back to separate facts from interpretations, consider both perspectives and one's own responsibility, identify a desired outcome, and prepare for an open conversation. Seek peer or institutional support, and contact official offices if policies may have been violated.
Paraskevas Filippidis - Learning to Be a Good Mentor
Q: What is important to prioritize in the first few months of a mentoring relationship?
Build transparency, trust, and psychological safety; agree on communication norms and boundaries; schedule regular check-ins; and give clear, timely, actionable feedback.
Alex Yen - Being Productive in your new environment
Q: What are some, or maybe what is the most common mistake that you have seen postdocs make in their first few months or maybe even just their first years?
Yen says postdocs often pressure themselves to produce immediately instead of treating the first months as an adjustment period. She encourages them to learn how their lab operates, reflect on what they want from the postdoc, and identify their next career direction.
Alex Yen - Being Productive in your new environment
Q: What advice do you have for postdocs to set goals and accountability for those goals with their faculty mentors?
Yen recommends starting with an Individual Development Plan, identifying which goals align with a faculty mentor's capacity, and communicating those goals clearly. She suggests keeping research check-ins separate from career-development discussions and requesting a quarterly meeting for the latter.
Montrell Seay - Importance of Networking
Q: What are you seeing with regard to AI and jobs for postdocs?
Seay says employers generally do not expect AI expertise so much as the ability to apply AI to problems, evaluate its output, and use it to inform decisions. As AI takes on routine tasks, interpersonal and communication skills become more important.
