  • Do better

Big fan of Rachel and came here to hear her thoughts. The “ host” of the podcast was constantly interrupting and at times belittling her. Please take the time to listen back to this episode and reflect.

  • Emotions are temporary

I Learned so much from listening to Jake about Izzard’s View on emotions. It’s ok to feel, but it only lasts less than 10 seconds. Then your thoughts, which you control, takes over. My life and family are better from listening to this and I recommend this podcast to EVERYONE!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Leslie Elliott Boyce on Counseling Education, Graduate Schools, and Ideological Bias in Mental Health
Q: What initially drew you to counseling, and what happened in your early programs that made you rethink this path?
I was drawn to helping people directly, but I found graduate programs focused more on paperwork, testing, and a growing social justice agenda rather than deep, person-centered therapy. This clash led me to pivot away from becoming a licensed clinician and toward coaching and public discourse.
Ryan Malphrus on Men’s Mental Health, Behavioral Issues in Boys, and What Therapy Should Feel Like
Q: Tell me what your angle is on what's happening these days, and how do we fix it?
The guest discusses the interdependence of individual change and systemic factors, emphasizing that change requires authentic clinician humility, transparent practice, and upstream work with families and environments rather than blaming the individual child; he advocates for flexible, human-centered approaches over rigid protocols.
Jonathan Cogburn on Systemic Theory, Family Structures, and Supporting Homeless Youth
Q: How does McKinney-Vento funding support homeless students in districts?
Funding helps cover essential needs for identified homeless students—items like clothing, school supplies, and emergency support—through district liaisons who identify eligible students and coordinate resources, with sometimes funds flowing through the district and enabling external support programs.
Jonathan Cogburn on Systemic Theory, Family Structures, and Supporting Homeless Youth
Q: What is the difference between first-order and second-order change in a family system?
First-order change addresses an issue within the existing pattern (e.g., reducing anger expression) but does not alter the underlying sequence of interactions; second-order change rewires the pattern itself (e.g., changing the rules and steps of interaction) and leads to deeper, longer-lasting transformation.
Jonathan Cogburn on Systemic Theory, Family Structures, and Supporting Homeless Youth
Q: Can you explain systems theory in simple terms?
Systems theory views families and relationships as interconnected networks where changes in one part affect the whole; rather than linear cause-and-effect, problems emerge from the patterns and homeostasis of the system, so interventions often target relational dynamics rather than individuals alone.
