  • Great Podcast!

The podcast episode "What's Your Disaster Recovery Plan?" is outstanding. My key takeaways from this episode are the importance of legal contracts and relationships with attorneys. The phrase "disaster comes opportunity" highlights the idea that even in challenging or adverse situations, there can be opportunities for growth, innovation, or positive change.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The New Merchant Sales Playbook
Q: What is the right partner profile for Cygnus Payments?
Cygnus looks for sophisticated, tech-oriented agents and ISOs who can compete smartly, add real value in conversations, and are open to learning. The company prioritizes margin-friendly partners who focus on a few verticals they can excel in.
The New Rules of Chargeback Prevention
Q: How does Disputifier help ISOs deal with VAMP and the changing dispute landscape?
Disputifier automates prevention and root-cause resolution, reducing TC40 risk by enabling pre-dispute actions such as bank-resolution links, instant refunds, and proactive merchant-customer communications to address issues before a dispute is filed and to keep VAMP ratios healthier.
The New Rules of Chargeback Prevention
Q: Tell us what SMMP is and why Mastercard created it.
SMMP is a continuous merchant monitoring program that sits alongside the existing Mastercard ECM framework; it focuses on new merchants—particularly startups—during the initial six months and tracks metrics like refunds and chargebacks to flag potential fraud for acquirers, without replacing existing dispute controls.
The Future of the Payments Ecosystem
Q: Can Stripe/Adyen challenge the traditional acquirer model, and what gaps remain for them?
Stripe and Adyen have superior tech and potential cost advantages but lack a fully reseller-friendly, merchant-facing software suite and broad, embedded gateway/processor bundling; their weakness is the missing, integrated, merchant-support software layer that ISOs rely on for scale.
The Future of the Payments Ecosystem
Q: What is the cost structure for a typical ISO and how does it compare to larger players like Square?
An ISO's costs are composed mainly of interchange (about 75-80% of merchant discount), card network fees (around 10%), and a significant processor/overhead component; bundled solutions like Square blend gateway, software, and processing to reduce the apparent per-merchant costs, at the expense of less personalized support.
