  • This show is special!

I love this show and I hope she continues to put out episodes regularly. It's a special place in the podcast world. Interesting topics that aren't brain rot and she asks very good intellectual questions. In a world full of hot takes this show prioritizes context and intellect. 5/5

  • Excellent Show

I wish there were 100 episodes, great way to elevate research in public discourse. I’d love for Kara to ask each guest what they don’t know yet at the end of every episode to highlight guest humility and future research needs.

Update: This billionaire episode had no research. It was just two people guessing at what billionaires think about. Very disappointing. I can get that episode anywhere. This show should have more rigor.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Should Americans have more kids?
Q: Has anything worked globally to raise fertility in a lasting way?
She notes that there are occasional, limited successes (e.g., Hungary) but emphasizes that sustained, durable changes are rare and depend on long-term commitments beyond election cycles.
Should Americans have more kids?
Q: So which is it? (narratives about why people delay having kids)
Buckles explains that while some say people delay due to priorities like career and housing, the reality is a complex mix where timing, economics, and opportunities interact, and there isn't a simple one-size-fits-all cause.
Why white collar jobs are heading to China
Q: Can you sketch out what you think the scenario might look like for white-collar jobs if China continues to dominate frontier sectors?
The path is to ride it down without constructive action, allowing sector after sector to lose leadership and innovative capacity, with fast-moving areas like biotech and robotics potentially shifting offshore over the next decade unless there is proactive, targeted policy. This includes investment in domestic capabilities, reforming tax and labor policies, and strengthening industrial policy to cushion workers through retraining and relocation.
Why boys and men are struggling in America
Q: What might be the reasons behind boys performing worse academically than girls?
Boys may be less mature than girls at certain developmental stages, and the education system has increasingly catered to female learning styles, contributing to growing performance gaps.
Why boys and men are struggling in America
Q: How can we address the decline in male labor force participation?
The decline is not simply due to lack of jobs but involves cultural, economic, and psychological factors, requiring comprehensive policy interventions.
